The Sabbath candles, of
course, are a means of hav-
ing light on the Sabbath,
the candles are lit before the
Sabbath so that Jews would
not be left in the dark on the
Sabbath.

The rabbis enhanced the
candlelighting before the
Sabbath begins with special
importance by assigning a
special benediction for this
act: -Historically, the bene-
diction was added because
there seemed to have been
some sects who, according to

the rabbis, misinterpreted
the biblical text which for-
bids kindling a light on the
Sabbath.
The latter claimed that
the text meant to say that a
Jewish home should simply
have no light or fire burning
on the Sabbath. They there-

fore spent the Sabbath eve
in the dark. The rabbis
strongly objected to this in-
terpretation and therefore
assigned a special religious
fulfillment to the act of
kindling the candles before
the Sabbath so that no one
would forget to do it.

Hussein Confirmed Iraq Aim

NEW YORK ( JTA) —
Rabbi William Berkowitz,
president of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund, said last week
that "Iraq's open call" for
Arab nuclear weapons con-
firms Israel's fears that the
Baghdad regime was build-
ing an atomic bomb for use
against the Jewish state
and further justifies Israel's
action in destroying the
reactor at Osirak."
Rabbi Berkowitz, speak-
, to JNF leaders at a re-
ception honoring Paul
Kedar, Israel's Consul-
General in New York, who
is returning home, cited an
address by President Sad-
dam Hussein of Iraq broad-
cast by Baghdad radio.
Meanwhile, the Ripon
Society, a research and
policy group of moderate
and progressive Repub-
licans, has urged the Re-
agan Administration to
create a nuclear-free
zone in the Middle East

and to stop the spread of
nuclear weapons.
The group said nations
exporting weapons-grade
uranium should be
punished with economic
sanctions, even if they are
U.S. allies.
