The program will feature as guest speaker the na- tionally known educator and Zionist, Prof. Benjamin Halpern. Dr. Halpern, who served as managing editor of the Jewish Frontier magazine and associate director of the departments of culture, education and publications of the Jewish Agency, be- came a research associate in Middle Eastern studies at Harvard University in 1956. He began his associa- tion with Brandeis Uni- versity in 1962 and was subsequently appointed professor of Near East- ern studies there. He be- came a member of the Jewish Agency Execu- tive in 1968. Halpern's numerous arti- cles, many of which were published in Jewish Fron- tier and Midstream maga- zines deal chiefly with prob- lems of Zionism, Israel society and the role of the Jews in United States society. His book, The Idea of the Jewish State," published in 1969, traces the develop- ment of Zionism both as an ideology and a movement. Morris Lieberman, longtime chairman of His- tadrut in Detroit, traced the history of the organization. According to Lieber- man, the founders of the Histadrut became the leaders of Israel: David Ben-Gurion, Moshe Sharett, Golda Meir; Zalman Shazar, Bebe Idelson and Levi Eshkol. The Histadrut anniver- sary recalls the "struggle of the Jewish worker in Pales- tine for his rightful place and share in the new Jewish community . . . It was a long struggle for the principle that the Jewish people must' be the ones to rebuild the land." Today, Histadrut is a Israel's Inspiration for Youth Described by Ex-Shaliakh Reuven Leibovich, Is- rael's cultural-aliya emis- sary to Detroit, retired this week after three years of service and returned on Thursday with his family to Beersheva. Returning with him are his wife, Ronit, who taught Hebrew at Temple Emanu-El during their re- sidence here, and their two children. Leibovich came here as shaliakh to the Hebrew de- partment of the Jewish Community Center. He con- tinued as the traditional as- signee from Israel to Jewish Center cultural activities, representing the World Zionist Organization and for the past two years also as the director of the aliya cen- ter in Detroit. During his stay here he interviewed many hun- dreds of applicants for aliya, and in the three- year period more than 300 left on aliya to the Jewish state. Of the considerable per- centage of youth who went on aliya, Leibovich ex- plained, most were inspired by earlier visits in Israel. Such experience more than any other were the inspira- tions for their settlement," he said. During his tenure here, Leibovich organized and attended many seminars at Wayne State University, the University of Michigan and Michigan State Uni- versity. He expressed con- cern that in each instance, of the three major univer- trade union federation, which has to its credit a network of progressive edu- cational institutions de- voted to teaching the basic tenets of Jewish cultural heritage. Histadrut also sponsors seminars, lectures, extension courses and cul- tural and recreational pro- grams throughout Israel. In Detroit, first with the Palestine Workers' Fund and the Gewerkshaften Campaign, many Histadrut functions have been sup- ported, among them social services, education institu- tions, health services, rec- reation and cultural centers and residences for the el- derly. "Our greatest strength has been the many chaverim and chaverot of our Labor Zionist move- ment who have given of themselves unstintingly to the cause of Histadrut. The numerous friends of the Histadrut in America can proudly look back upon over 60 years of cooperation with it in all its undertakings and take great satisfaction in their ever-increasing share in its achievements." Cantor Louis Klein of Cong. Bnai Moshe, will pre- sent a musical program con- sisting of Hebrew and Yid- dish songs. Refreshments will be served, and the community is invited. Impressed by the general Jewish community atti- tudes in Metropolitan De- troit, Leibovich's comment that at most gatherings of major importance attendance was primarily by the elder citizens, that the youth were often few in view. He said that the major aims of a shaliakh from Is- rael is to encourage youth participation, and he ex- pressed the hope that there will be changes in that di- rection. Leibovich, `- no will as- sume his forrAer post as director of the Jewish Center in Beersheva, was six months old when he was brought to Israel by his parents, concentra- tion camp survivors, in December of 1948.
