The forest was planted in September 1979 on the oc- casion of the 80th birthday of Mrs. Herman, and in memory of her husband, John R. Herman. It was petitioned through the Detroit office of JNF by their son, Dr. Donald L. Herman, professor of politi- cal science at Grand Valley State College in Grand Rapids, who spent a sabbat- ical year in Israel, and by their daughter, Hortense Herman Alper of Bloom- field Hills, through the John R. and Rose Herman Foundation. Mrs. Herman is honor- ary building chairman for Temple Israel and through the family foun- dation, donated $250,000 to the new temple on Walnut Lake and Drake Roads. Mrs. Herman is a long- time contributor to the Zedakah Club, locally, to the Reform Jewish Appeal and the Miami Heart Insti tute in Miami, and makes matching donations in Michigan and Florida to Women's American ORT, the American Heart Asso- ciation, City of Hope, Na- tional Asthma Center in Denver, Hadassah, Anti- Defamation League of Bnai Brith and the JNF. Both Mrs. Herman and her daughter are life members of JNF. Other of the family's philanthropies include the establishment of the John R. Herman Board Room in the United Hebrew Schools Building on 12 Mile Road, and the dedication of a room which bears their names in the cardio-vascular unit of Harper Hospital.
