HOLLYWOOD — "To-
pol" is the name of an actor
who has the distinction to be
recognized instantly by a
single-word name.
In 1964, when the Hol-
lywood Foreign Press Asso-
ciation, introduced the 29-
year-old broad-shouldered
young man as the Golden
Globe award winner for the
NBC television production

was Chaim Topol which lit-
erally means "Tree of Life."
After many character
parts and leading roles in
films and on the stage,
Topol now has embarked
into a completely different
characterization — that of a
mysterious Greek figure
who becomes involved in a
dangerous game of intrigue
with 007 James Bond
(Roger Moore) . in the 12th
motion picture of the suc-
cessful film series from the
pen of Ian Fleming, For
Your Eyes Only," presented
by Albert R. Broccoli for
United Artists release.
Is Colombo, the Greek, a
good or bad guy? Topol grins
and replies with a twinkle
in his eyes, "audiences will
have to wait until they see
the picture to find out for
themselves."
In spite of his youth,
Topol has spent 25 years in
show business. Born in Tel
Aviv, Sept. 9, 1935, to a
Russian father and a Polish
mother, he was urged by his
mother to become a lawyer
while his father wanted him
to follow in his profession as
a bus driver.
Yet, at 14, Topol wanted
to be a printer and became
one. He also was a leader in
the youth movement.
At 18, he joined the He-
brew army and was sent to a
border community with a
pioneer unit volunteering
as an entertainer to ad-
vance to commander of the
theatrical group of Nahal.
He was discharged from the
army in 1956 and spent
some time in a kibutz, later
founding the satirical thea-
ter, "The Green Onion."
In 1960, he organized the
Municipal Theater of Haifa.
He served as leading actor
and played such roles at
Petruchio in The Taming
of the Shrew," the Wig-
maker in "Rashomon,"
Paider the Soldier in "An-
dorra," Jean in
"Rhinoceros," Pat in "The
Hostage," Azdak in "The
Caucasian Chalk Circle,"
and Tevye in the Israeli
production of the musical,
"Fiddler on the Roof." He
starred in the lead role in
the American film version
of "Fiddler."

GEORGIE JESSEL,
who died at age 83 in Los
Angeles, had been in show
business since he was 10
years old singing at Bar
Mitzvas and lodge meet-
ings. In 1910, he formed a
professional -singing group
with the late Walter Win-
chell and Jack Wiener (who
is still active in Hollywood
as an actors agent).
This brought him to the
attention of Gus Edwards
who hired him for his
traveling vaudeville
ensemble.. He later toured
in an act opposite Eddie
Cantor. He made his first
"talking motion picture," an
experimental movie by
Thomas A. Edison as early
as 1911.
In 1925, he starred on
Broadway in Samson
Raphaelson's musical
drama "The Jazz Singer. He
Was signed td reci-eatb the
role on the screen in War-
ner's "talkie," but due to a
disagreement the part went
to Al Jolson.
Of all created comforts,
God is the leader; you are

through to the roots of
British society anti-
