Editor, The Jewish News:
In June 1944, America.
and British -officials knew
that at Auschwitz the Nazis
were exterminating 12,000
men, women and children
every day — and yet they
did nothing! Repeatedly
they were asked to bomb
those hellish facilities out of
existence, but still they did
nothing!
In 1944 there was no
Jewish state that would find
a way to wipe such a scourge
from the earth and save its
people.
But there is a Jewish
state now. The prime re-
sponsibility, above all else,
of a country is to protect the
lives of its people. That is
what Israel has done in de-
stroying the capability of
Iraq to produce nuclear
bombs.
It was no secret that the
nuclear facility in Iraq was
intended to manufacture
nuclear bombs to be used to
incinerate hundreds of
thousands of Israelis.
French and Italian govern-
ment officials surely knew
the purpose the Iraqi nu-
clear program, of which
they were essential, was to
make bombs — but Iraqi oil
and Iraqi orders for
weapons was more impor-
tant to them than the pre-
vention of another
Holocaust of Jews.

In particular, the Jewish
archives as an integral part
of the Burton Historical
Collection of the Detroit
Public Library has been the
repository of virtually
thousands of historical
documents including those
of the United Jewish
Charities, the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, Workmen's
Circle and the Jewish
Community Council. It con-
tains thousands of records of
Temple Beth El and per-
sonal papers of individuals
including those of this
writer. In addition it in-
cludes microfilms and
photographs.
I urge all Jewish congre-
gations, organizations,
business establishments
and private individuals to
deposit their materials in
the Jewish archives where
they will be preserved and
serve as primary sources for
social scientists and social
historians and our descen-
dants.
