BB Backs Romania MFN

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Bnai Brith International
President Jack J. Spitzer,
speaking on behalf of the
Conference of Presidents of
Major Jewish Organiza-
tions, Monday advised a
Congressional subcommit-
tee that the conference sup-
ports another one-year ap-,
proval of most-favored-
nation status for Romania,
but advocates continued,
close scrutiny as well as
procedural changes in the
way Romania requires
emigration applications to
be made.
Testifying before the
House Ways and Means
Subcommittee on Trade
considering extending
Romania's MFN status,
Spitzer declared that "we
find the agreement (on freer
Jewish emigration from
Romania) is being substan-
tially fulfilled and we have
received cooperation from
the Romanian government,
but many problems are still
to be resolved."
One of the problems cited
by Spitzer is the require-
ment that prospective emi-
grants must appear at a
police station to request

appropriate forms to apply
for an emigration applica-
tion, Spitzer pointed out
that such a procedure is "in-
7
timidating."
Instead, Spitzer said
that the Conference of
Presidents is recom-
mending that the Roma-
nian government allow
application requests to
be made available
through the offices of the
Chief Rabbi of Romania,
Rabbi Moses Rosen. _
Spitzer further stated
that a backload of 527 cases
presently exists of Roma-
nian Jews wishing to emi-
grate.

Israeli Judge Hears WB Case

JERUSALEM — An Is-
raeli judge began hearing a
case in Kiryat Arba, near
Hebron, this week. It
marked the first time that
an Israeli judge heard a case
in the administered ter-
ritories.
The case involved the
Kiryat Arba settlers. The

settlement is asking a ce-
ment block manufacturer to
vacate some of his land for a
street. Military authorities
said they were not qualified
to hear the case.
Arab spokesman claimed
that the case marked an-
other step in Israeli annexa-
tion of the West Bank.
