(JTA) — A leading Or- thodox rabbi criticized what he called attempts by Con- servatiVe and Reform groups to undertake a pro- gram to utilize the United Jewish Appeal, the United Israel Appeal and federa- tion agencies throughout the United States to press Israel to grant their rabbis the right to officiate at mar- riages, divorce and conver- sion in Israel. Rabbi Sol Roth, president of the Rabbinical Council of America, made the charge in his presidential address at the opening of the 45th annual convention of the _ Orthodox rabbinical group. Addressing some 500 TaMaRCIFF Your Sign of Value for Sales • Service Custom Leasing TamaRoFF Buick-DMC-Honda 28585 Telegraph Rd. across from Tel-Twelve Mall Southfield, Mich. delegates, Rabbi Roth called on all religious groups in the Jewish corn- munity to reaffirm the in- dispensable unity of the Jewish people which, he said, "has always been pre- dicated on the fundamental premise that in various forms, Orthodox, Conserva- tive and Reform groups shall not adopt a partisan posture but rather shall work together to respond to the challenges to Jewish life that are universal in na- ture." House cuts UN Funding WASHINGTON (JTA) — The House appropriation subcommittee eliminated Wednesday the $500,000 appropriation for the United Nations "Decade of Women" and placed the funds instead in a bi- partisan fund to assist poor women in developing coun- tries. The "decade" started in 1976 and will continue until 1985. Rep. William Lehman tD-Fla.) who proposed the action, said that the UN De- cade of Women conference held in Copenhagen last July "was practically run by the Palestine Liberation Organization, whose goal was to politicize it in the same way it did the Mexico City conference in 1975" which was "the first inter- national effort to identify Zionism with racism." Rep. Lehman stressed that "as long as any UN agency insists on violating its rules so that it can os- tracize Israel and promote anti-Semitism or pervert Western values, our sub- committee will have some- thing to say about it." The Michigan Committee of Sports for Israel Extends Their Warmest Congratulations and Best Wishes to THE 1981 MICHIGAN MACCABIAH ATHLETES You symbolize the power and the glory 8, our young Jewish people, As all of you gather together from every continent in a friendly and inspiring demonstration of skill and strength, in Israel. Goldmann, a past president of the World Jewish Congress and of the World Zionist Organiza- tion, maintained that no solution could be found to the crisis in Lebanon until Israeli-Arab relations are improved and an important prerequisite for that de- velopment was the creation of a Palestinian state. 01111/4 4IW You Don't Need Your Jewelry Appraised...
