Clients and Staff Star at JARC Election

An audio-visual pre-
sentation, starring clients
and staff of the Jewish
Association for Retarded
Citizens, highlighted the
annual meeting of the
JARC, at which Norman
Wachter was -re-elected
president.
The June 18 meeting,
held at the Jimmy Prentis
Morris Branch of the Jewish
Community Center, focused
on the progress made by the
organization in establish-
ing four Haverim Homes for
retarded adults, a semi-
independent apartment
program, a new family as-
sistance program and a
wide range of auxiliary
rvices.
A number of Haverim
Home residents were on
hand to help JARC Execu-
tive Director Joyce Keller

tion showing a "Day in the
Life of . ." those whose
lives have been enriched by
the organization.
Among them was one of
the first clients to be
supervised in his own
apartment. "It took a
year, but, man, it was
worth it," said Ron
Smiler. "I feel great about
myself, and it gives my
mother peace of mind to
see me on my own."
Jacob Feldman, a resi-
dent of the Haverim Home
on Marlow in Oak Park,
gave an illustrated account
of how he does the laundry
— a narrative met with
applause from the audience.
Residential programs direc-
tor Lynn Medow wrote and
produced the audio-visual
presentation.
Special citations were
awarded to two volunteers,
Ruben Elbinger and Laura
Moore, who are friends and
advocates to two Haverim
Home residents. Also men-
tioned was the Temple Is-
rael Youth Group, who have
contributed generously to
the JARC and arranged so-
cial functions for the resi-
dents.
In spite of the progress,
said Ms. Keller, it will re-
quire the "support and
con!mitment of every one of
us" to, meet the challenges
by foes of group homes. "We
cannot sit still," she said
"Over 100 are waiting to be
placed in our residences."
Wachter paid tribute to
the staff and board of
JARC and made special
mention of the growing
role of Jewish Welfare
Federation, through its
agencies, in meeting the
needs of retarded per-
sons.

The Social Security Ad-
ministration is seeking
Holocaust survivors who
falsified their birth records
during World War II to pro-
tect themselves during the
Nazi terror.
Since youthfulness was
about the only way a person
could protect himself from
the Nazis, some survivors
raised or lowered their ages
to the 18-30 range. That age
group was chosen for hard
labor rather than im-
mediate destruction.
Many survivors who have
immigrated to the U.S. re-
tained the identities that
kept them alive during the
war. Some have reached re-
tirement age and are afraid/
of making their true iden-
tities known for fear of de-
portation or persecution.
Survivors who are in
this position and can
supply evidence of their
true age or a written
statement should contact
the Social Security Ad-
ministration, 334-0410,
ext. 230. Among the evi-
dence needed to prove
that one was a survivor of
the Holocaust are:
Copies of correspondence
from or depositions to the
West German government
under indemnification pro-
cedures, official war re-
cords, identification pap-
ers or passports identifying
the holder as Jewish and
evidence of residence in a
Nazi-controlled country.
