NEW YORK (JTA) — Dr.
Viktor Brailovsky, a 45-
year-old cyberneticist and
leading Jewish activist was
sentenced by a Moscow
court last week to three
years and three months in
Siberian internal exile for
alleged anti-state defama-
tion, according to the Stu-
dent Struggle for Soviet
Jewry and the Union of
Councils for Soviet Jews.
The term was reduced
from five years because
Brailovsky had been im-
prisoned since last Nov. 13,
two days after the opening
in Madrid of the review con-
ference of the Helsinki
agreement, which the
Soviet Union signed, which
strongly supports basic
human rights.
Brailovsky was the or-
ganizer of unofficial scien-
tific and Jewish seminars,
which met in his apartment
in Moscow, and the editor of
the samizdat (underground)
"Jews in the USSR."
New York State Attor-
ney General Robert Ab-
rams sent a cable to
Soviet President Leonid
- Brezhnev urging him t o
take whatever steps are
necessary to ensure that
Brailovsky and his family
are permitted to join their
relatives in Israel."
He also cabled the Pro-
curator General of the
USSR calling the arrest and
trial of Brailovsky "a flag-
rant violation of his basic
rights under both Soviet
and international law."
In an article received by
the The Jewish News from
the Novosti Press Agency
sent via the Soviet Embassy
in Washington, the Soviet
news service claimed that
the trial of Brailovsky was
open and that "all petitions
by the defendant were satis-
fied, and he fully exercised
his rights as the accused
and as counsel for the de-
fense."
Brailovsky acted as his
own attorney at the trial.
In a related develop-
ment, President Reagan
gave his personal assur-
ances that the fate of
Soviet Jews will continue
to be on the United States
agenda in any negotia-
tions with the Soviet
Union.
In a telephone call to
Theodore Mann, chairman
of the National Conference
-on Soviet Jewry (NCSJ), the
President said he has al-
ready communicated this
fact to Soviet President
Leonid Brezhnev in a per-
sonal note.
The President's telephone
call was in response to a let-
ter of June 16 from Mann, in
which Ole. Ameiican J - ewish
leader conveyed a message
given him on his recent trip
to the Soviet Union by 15
Jewish emigration activists
from several cities in the
USSR.
The message expressed
gratitude to the President
for his recent meeting with
Avital Shcharansky, wife of
prisoner of conscience
Anatoly Shcharansky, and
a recently released former
prisoner, Yosif Men-
delevich.

That's why we use pure beef to make our flavorful,
plump and juicy frankfurters and knackwurst.
For Kosher is more than just taste. It's quality.
It's why we don't use meat by-products, non-meat
fillers, or artificial coloring, even though the U.S.
Government OK's them.
It's why we do use a lot of expensive beef.
(Parts that don't, meet our standards, are sold to
other manufacturers.)
But that's an advantage. Because Best's Kosher
on our label means that our customers are getting
the finest all-beef frankfurters and knackwurst.

President Reagan was
urged by leading members
of the Senate and House on
Wednesday to withdraw his
Administration's proposed
arms package sale to Saudi
Arabia or risk "a humiliat-
ing defeat" and the danger
of dividing the nation.
Sen. Bob Packwood (R-
- Ore.) told a press conference
at the Capitol that 54 Sena-
tors, a majority of the Se-
nate, have signed his letter
to the President, urging him
not to sell the five AWACS
reconnaisance aircraft,

Saudi Arabia.
"It is our deep belief that
this sale is not in the best
interest of the United States
and therefore recommend
that you refrain from send-
ing this proposal to Con-
gress," the letter said.
