Secret Hebrew Schools Lead Russian Aliya

By MOSHE RON

The Jewish News Special
Israel Correspondent

TEL AVIV — In the small
apartment of Hebrew
teacher Liova Gorodecki in
Moscow a group of pupils
assembled two months ago.
Now we shall have a talk
about how some of us are
KGB agents who have infil-
trated the apartment, and
about the pupils who are
taking part in lessons,
which are forbidden accord-
ing to the law," the teacher
said.
"We are policemen," one
of the pupils said in Hebrew.
"Your documents, please,"
another one of the pupils
cried. "What do you want
from us? We are only study-
ing."
"I have left my documents
at home," a girl said.
"Please, come with us to the
police station," the first
pupil orders.
Suddenly the doorbell
rings. Who is there?" the
teacher asks. "Police"
answers a harsh voice.
Policemen and KGB ag-
ents enter the apartment.
This is quite an ordinary
event in Russia. But this
time, in this case, the reac-
tion is different. Laughter
greets the officials. "Why do
you laugh?" the_ police offi-
cer asks.
The answer of:the pupils
does not satisfy the police
commander. The Hebrew
talk about the possibility of
KGB agents infiltrating in
to the lessons was inter-
rupted by the sad reality
and all participants were
arrested.
Among those arrested
was Masha Azark. Her hus-
band Shmuel was at that
time occupied with prepara-
tions for a secret perform-
ance of a Yiddish play. He
arrived later in the apart-
ment of Gorodecki and
found a note in the door:
"Shmuel, your tea is ready
on the table. Enter and
drink it. Your wife is in the
police station — Masha."
Shmuel Azark, who is
now living in Jerusalem,

Shmuel, 32 years old, tall
and with features of an in-
tellectual, was born in Mos-
cow. He was an art critic
and was dismissed from his
job after applying for immi-
gration documents to
Isarel. He decided to set up a
secret Yiddish theater
which performed "My
Famous Hero Brothers" and
the "Purim Shpiel" for chil-
dren.
Shmuel is one of a group
of six who have arrived in
Israel. They are the Gorki
group, named after the
school in Moscow where
they rehearsed. All of them
speak Hebrew and have
been in charge of secret He-
brew and Jewish schools in
Moscow.
Lev Ibasov is the
youngest of the group. He is
21 years old, a tall young
man in a bright suit. He was
remote from Jewishness,
learned Hebrew and was a
teacher for 15 groups of
pupils. They were active in
inducing Jews to emigrate
to Israel. They mobilized
new Hebrew pupils and
teachers to replace those
who went to Israel.
They are asked how
children of assimilated
families become Zionists
and learn Hebrew in
secret, in spite of the
danger of spending years
in prison?
Shmuel answers, "The
