12 DAILY DINNER SPECIALS

Friday, June 19, 1981 33

(Continued from Page 32)
The roots of P'Jazz are ac-
tually found high in the sky,
on the 25th floor of the hotel
. . . It was a Sunday after-
noon concert series at top of
the Pontch, "Top Jazz,"
which inspired P'Jazz.
In the late 1960s,
downtowners could enjoy a
Sunday brunch at Top of the
Pontch, then stay for an af-
ternoon of hot jazz . . . Per-
forming in some of those
bands were the men who
would soon form the nucleus
of the New McKinney Cot-
ton Pickers and the Brook-
side Jazz Ensemble.
The first season of
P'Jazz was in 1972 . . . and
features the first public
performances by the New
McKinney Cotton Pic-
kers and vocalist Dave
Wilborn from the original
McKinney Cotton Pic-
kers.
P'Jazz draws as many as
2,000 people per concert on
the Hotel Pontchartrain
terrace . . . with profes-
sional people, true jazz
buffs, guys and gals from
every walk of life . . . from
Ann Arbor, Toledo, Port
Huron and other areas
around.
More than a century of
jazz talent comes to the
stage on the poolside terrace
when P'Jazz presents Dizzy
Gillespie this Monday .. .
and Art Blakey and his Jazz
Messengers on Wednesday.
Gillespie and his rakishly
bent trumpet take the stage
at 6:30 p.m. . . . Same time
for Blakey, who for 30 years
has provided "on-the-gig"
training for some of the
world's top jazz artists as he
presents his class of '81.
John Birks "Dizzy" Gil-
lespie is 63 years old,
going on 22 these days .. .
He still blows bebop like
he did when he, Charlie
"Bird" Parker and
Thelonious Monk began
their jazz innovations in
the 1940s.
While still a teenager in
the late 1930s, Gillespie
was playing the horn with
Charlie Barnett and
Tommy Dorsey . . . He is
credited with recruiting
Cuban drummer Chano
Poza, whose influence is
still heard in Gillespie's
music.
With his cheeks puffed
out, Gillespie breathes the
soul into such classics as
"Night in Tunisia," "Tin Tin
Deo ' and "Salt Peanuts" .. .
He and his young backup
players also reflect modern
jazz trends in new songs fla-
vored with fusion, funk and
a dash of the avant garde.
Art Blakey has influ-
enced a whole generation of
musicians who trained with
the Jazz Messengers . .
Alumni of the group include
Freddie Hubbard, Horace
Silver, Donald Byrd, Lee
Morgan, Chuck Mangione,
Curtis Fuller and Jackie
McClean.
Blakey is one of the
more philosophical jazz
artists and one of the
most articulate.
"For me, I am at the point
in life where I don't play

drums to make a lot of
money," he told Downbeat
magazine. "Most of the kids
I taught who are in the rock
field could buy and sell me.
For me that's not the point;
I'm playing because I'm
having a ball. It's my whole
life."
LENORE PAXTON is
at Archibald's, S. Wood-
ward in Birmingham until
tomorrow night . . . Alexan-
der Zonjic's jazz quartet fol-
lows Tuesday through
Saturday until July 11.
IT'S GOOD TO eat again
at Figurehead Restaurant,
west Nine Mile just west of
Telegraph . . . Former
owner Tom Coleman is
back . . . saving the opera-
tion with partner Len
Prysok.
There's a couple of dandy
waitresses at Figurehead
. . . Mary Covert and Naomi
Collingsworth . . . smiling,
efficient, competent and
very personable.
STEVE LAURENCE-
LLE is the new executive
assistant manager of North-
field Hilton in Troy . . . re-
turning after a two-year
