Father's Day
JUNE 21

WITH A SYMBOL OF LIFE

will celebrate the Bat
Mitzva of a Russian Jewish
girl in absentia.
The daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert (Loretta)
Littky of Huntington
Woods, Wendi will read a
specially prepared state-
ment at her Bat Mitzva
Saturday at Cong. Beth
Shalom, before reciting the
Haftorah.
She will say: "As I chant
my Haftorah, I observe this
Bat Mitzva not only for my-
self, but also for Kira Vol-
vovsky- of Gorky, Russia,
who was just called to
the Torah in absentia and is
not permitted by the Soviet
government to have a simha
like mine. May Kira and her
family find happiness and
the blessing of freedom in
Eretz Yisrael."
Wendi will be the first
at Beth Shalom to celeb-
rate a "twinned" Bat
Mitzva. She will give a
talk in Hebrew saying
she's dedicating her Bat
Mitzva to Kira.
On the bima during the
Bat Mitzva, will be a
roped-off chair on whose
seat will be a Bat Mitzva
certificate for Kira and a
Bible. According to Mrs.
Littky, the family will send
a package to the Volvovskys
after the Bat Mitzva, but
will not include the Bat
Mitzva certificate or Bible
since they will be confis-
cated by the Soviet
authorities.
A student at Hillel Day
School, Wendi said she
never studied the Soviet
Jewry situation, but
learned of it at camp two
years ago.
When the time came to
make the Bat Mitzva ar-
rangements, it was Wendi
who suggested the idea of
sharing the Bat Mitzva, her
mother said.
The Littkys learned of
the shared Bat Mitzva
ceremony from Rabbi
David Nelson of Beth
Shalom. Rabbi Nelson
had seen an article in
Conservative Judaism
magazine and passed

along the information to
the Littkys. Littky fol-
lowed up by making con-
tact with the National
Conference on Soviet
Jewry in New York.
Kira's father, Leonid, was
dismissed from his job in
1974 after applying for a
visa to emigrate to Israel.
He was refused a visa by
means of a typical Soviet
ploy, that through his job he
had access to government
secrets. Leonid was a re-
searcher in computer design
and large scale integrated
circuit equipment.
In 1979, the Volvovskys
moved to Moscow to be
closer to Jewish refusnik
circles. They took a short
vacation and upon return-
ing to their apartment
found it ransacked and
books on Jewish topics con-
fiscated. They then were
served eviction papers by
their landlady. Taking their
case to court, they lost ev-
erything.

In addition, the court
charged that their marriage
was a fake, based on dubi-
ous "evidence - and the Vol-
vovskys were exiled to
Gorky.

The Littkys, including
Wendi's brothers, Bruce,
Steven and Scott, will pub-
licize the plight of their
Soviet Jewish counterparts
through this important
ceremony celebrated by a
talented and unselfish
young lady.

Israeli Leaders
Promise to Back
Project Renewal

NEW YORK
Menahem Begin, Shimon
Peres and Moshe Dayan
have declared their full
support for the continuation
of Project Renewal, the pro-
gram designed to help com-
plete the absorption of
45,000 immigrant families
living in physically and so-
cially distressed neighbor-
hoods in Israel.
Project Renewal is a
partnership program fund-
ed in part by the govern-
ment and in part by free
world Jewish communities.
The separate statements by
the three major leaders
were in response to recently
expressed concern that
Project Renewal might not
continue as a government
priority following the up-
coming June elections in Is-
rael, thus threatening the
overall rehabilitation ef-
fort.
