Vicky Leebove 851-0789 This is the time of the year that the basketball coaches from the National League of Israel make their annual pilgrimage to the United States searching for talent for their respective clubs. Within the last two weeks, at least, six coaches and/or general managers have wended their way to this country to discuss pros- pects and prices for players. They all come in with the same story: they are looking for a big center and a good playmaker. There are restrictions so far as what these coaches MIKE'S QUALITY FRUIT MARKET 557-6820 12 Mile & Southfield I The Quality and The Prices Are Right-1 "EVERYTHING FOR THE BEVERLY HILLS DIET" DELICIOUS JUMBO 6 SIZE SUGAR SWEET JARLSBERG CHEESE $2 HONEYDEWS 99 ceach lb. Some coaches, because of team drop-outs and transfers, are in a posi- tion to bring in two Jewish basketball players, but the majority are here seeking one Jewish player and one non-citizen, obviously, a big, tall, strong reboun- der. Coaches - from abroad have been attending var- ious basketball camps to ob- serve players who are a cut or two under the caliber re- quired by the National Bas- ketball Association teams. These camps, some under the jurisdiction of the NBA itself, send out literature to coaches all over Europe and the Middle East. This being a Maccabia year, the pickings are very lean so far as the Jewish players are concerned. Al- most every player looked over by the Israeli coaches is continuing with his college work and/or is not up to standards that the Israeli coaches desire. Dan Schayes and Willie Sims are the stars of the U.S. Maccabia teams. Schayes, who was the 13th pick in last week's NBA draft, regardless of what happens, will prob- ably, ultimately sign a contract assuring him of security for at least one year and maybe over a multiple period of sea- sons. Sims, in the event he does not stay with an NBA club, has a good proposition pro- ferred by a top flight Israeli National League team, and he will end up in that coun- try.
