Ever since, volunteers from all corners of the globe come each summer to Israel to participate in archeologi- cal digs at sites searching for remains of civilizations from as far back as the early neolithic and "prehistoric" periods all the way through the .Solomonic, Herodian, Roman and Byzantine periods — to "modern" sites dating from the time of Crusaders. One of the digs scheduled for this year is at the resort city of Caesarea on the Mediterranean shore. Part of the dig is open only to ex- perienced divers, as its goal is to discover remnants of the Roman-Byzantine port of Caesarea, which, histo- rians tell us, rivalled Piraeus and Alexandria in size, and had enormous lighthouse statues placed far out to sea. Another dig will tackle the Crusader Castle of Apollonia north of Tel Aviv, and in Jerusalem archeologists will con- tinue the dig at the Fifth Century BCE "City of David." A total of 33 digging sites are open to volunteers for the 1981 season. Most of the digs are restricted to those at least 18 years of age, and volunteers should be in good physical condition. For in- formation, contact the Is- rael Government Tourist Office, 350 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y., 10001.
