CHICAGO — Not too
many large businesses that
were founded in the 1800's
are still run by the same
family that founded them.
One exception is the Best
Kosher Sausage Co.
Originally founded by
Isaac Oscherwitz in 1886,
the kosher sausage com-
pany was started in the
river town of Cincinnati,
bustling with stern wheel-
ers and steam boats.
Oscherwitz had emi-
grated from Germany
where he had been a saus-
age maker. He brought his
old world know-how and
new world dreams to the
heart of a growing America.
As settlers moved down the
Ohio River, they stopped Off
at Cincinnati to provision
themselves for their trek to
the west.
A great favorite among
the early settlers was Os-
cherwitz kosher saus-
ages. The fame of his
products spread
throughout the Midwest.
Today, the fourth genera-
tion of the Oscherwitz fam-
ily is now actively engaged
in the management of the
company.
About 1925 several mem-
bers of the Oscherwitz fam-
ily moved to Chicago and
started their own line of
kosher sausage products.
About 30 years later the
two companies were merged
and combined their produc-
tion and headquarters in
Chicago. Today, they con-
tinue to produce kosher beef
products under both labels
. . . the Oscherwitz kosher
brand and the Best Kosher
Sausage Co. label.
Best kosher products
are sold from coast-to-
coast from Los Angeles to
Washington, D.C., and
from Detroit to Miami.
Among the Best kosher
