Jewish Education on Decline in Latin American Countries

JERUSALEM (JNI)
Only 30,000 students cur-
, rently receive some form of
Jewish education in Latin
America and, more than
half the total, some 17,000,
receive their instruction in
Argentina where there is a
shortage of qualified
teachers.
Only 20-25 percent of
Latin American Jewish
students receive some type
of Hebrew education, ac-
cording to Israeli experts.
Before a subcommittee of
the Zionist Action Commit-
+-(7,, Argentina Prof. Jamie
ikelstein said that in
some communities parents
fear that Hebrew education
could induce their children
to move to Israel.

"In the 1930s and 1940s
Hebrew education
flourished due to the
Holocaust and the estab-
lishment of the state of Is-
rael," he added. "But
Jewish high school
alone can no longer con-
front the cultural influ-

ence of the society sur-
rounding it because to-
day's Jewish home is
empty of Jewish con-
tent."
Finkelstein told the
committee that among the
small communities and
countries with a good, lib-

eral general education, the
number of students in
Jewish schools is dropping.
But their proportion has
risen to 90 percent or more
of the scholastic population
in countries where the state
education is poor, sectarian
or anti-liberal.

Knesset Passes
Election Change

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Knesset moved hastily
last week to ram through an
amendment to the election
law that the Supreme Court
ruled was not valid when it
was passed originally last
month. The amendment se-
verely limits the amount of
broadcast time allowed new
political parties that have
not previously run in Knes-
set elections.
The major parties —
Likud, Labor and the Na-
tional Religious Party —
with a common interest in
the amendment, joined
forces to draft a new bill and
rush it through the three
readings required by law.
It was adopted by a 61-
plus majority. The high
court had invalidated the
earlier measure because it
was passed with a majority
of fewer than 61 votes.

RI Smokers

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The government plunged
more deeply into supply side
economics last week, a pol-
icy the opposition charges is
a pre-election ploy to woo
voters with lower prices on a
wide range of consumer
goods.
The latest reductions, the
sixth since Yoram Aridor
became Finance Minister,
was touted as a campaign to
"beat inflation." It involves
the Dubek cigarette cartel
which has demanded a 31
percent price increase. The
Treasury agreed to absorb
the rise by lowering the
cigarette tax from 54 to 45
percent.
In another development,
the Treasury last month
rowed an unprecedented
, 0 million Shekels (about
$80 million) from commer-
cial banks. It denied press
reports that the loans were
taken to avoid printing
more currency.
