Captain, Zim
Are Blamed for
Mezada Loss

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
court of inquiry faulted the
master and owners of the Is-
raeli bulk carrier Mezada
for her loss, with 24 lives,
during a North Atlantic
gale near Bermuda on
March 8.
The panel, sitting in
Haifa, said Tuesday that Is-
rael's worst maritime disas-
ter resulted from a combi-
nation of stormy seas and
human error.
It found that Capt. Gera
Levin, who went down with
his ship, had failed to take
proper actions when she
began to take water
through a hatch cover
smashed by the heavy seas.
It also charged the Zim
Lines, owners of the
Mezada, with laxity in deal-
ing with reports of the ship's
difficulties.
The court said the
authorities in Bermuda
seem to have shown more
concern than the Zim man-
agement on the basis of in-
formation recieved. It
recommended creation of a
team of experts to draw up
emergency procedures for
Israel's merchant fleet.

Israel Invites
Lech Walesa

GENEVA (JTA) — Be- -
fore leaving Geneva on his
way back to Poland, Lech
Walesa, leader of the Polish
union, Solidarity, told the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
that the Histadrut delegate
to the international labor
conference had invited him
to visit Israel.
"I was happy to receive
this invitation but right
now I have a lot of work to do
at home and cannot travel
to Israel but at a later date
shall do so," Walesa said.
He also said that he had
had a long meeting with
U.S. Labor Secretary
Raymond Donovan who had
invited him to the U.S. This
visit also will have to wait
some time, Walesa said. He
also said "I am for coopera-
tion with the trade union in
Israel."
He said he favored a col-
laboration between Poland,
Israel and the United
States. He added that Po-
land had cheap labor and
minerals, such as copper
and charcoal and petrol, but
"we do not have the means
and know-how to develop
and transport them. Thus a
collaboration with Israel,
the U.S. and Japan may be
very profitable."
