LOOKING BACK ON Columns of Yesteryears: May 21, 1965 . . . from Myron Cohen . . . about Sam, successful dress man- ufacturer, who had to make a trip to the West Coast on business. His loving wife, Sadie , resented the trip bitterly because it meant celebrat- ing their anniversary apart . . . Plead as she might, he couldn't avoid the trip and left his tearful Sadie behind . . . Every night he called from the coast and every conversation ended with pain and sobs. Sam had to do something special to prove his own an- guish and great love, so one evening he phoned and said, "Sadie dear, I'm sending you two wonderful presents — a Picasso and a Jaguar" . . . and he did. A few days later, Sam asked Sadie during one of their phone conversations, "Didn't the Picasso and the Jaguar arrive yet?" . . . "Not both, Sam," answered Sadie, "only one of them came." . . . "Good!' Won- derful!" Sam exclaimed. "Which one?' _. . . "Who knows?" answered Sadie. Sept. 24, 1965 . . . Ever hear "High Noon" done in twist and waltz tempo? . . . Feb. 27, 1970 . . . Marlin Sanders, seven-year-old son of Ida and Jack Sanders, be- came thirsty or thought he did . . . He called out, `Worn, I wanna drink" . . . Ida told him to go to sleep. Marlin grunted, turned over and was silent for 10 minutes . . . then again, "Mom, I wanna drink" . . . And again Ida told him to go to sleep. Another 10 minutes of in- tense silence, then "Mom, I wanna drink" . . . This time, Ida said that if he didn't go to sleep she would come in and spank him. More silence, but just for about two minutes, and then, "Mom, when you come in to spank- me, bring me a drink will you?" The voice of the people is the voice of God.
