Counselor Claims
U.S. UN Policy
Undergoing Shift
NEW YORK — The
United States has begun to
effectively use its leverage
within the United Nations
to protest and prevent the
continued politicization and
demoralization of the world
body, according to Carl Ger-
shman, assistant and coun-
selor to U.S. Ambassador to
the UN, Jeanne Kirkpat-
rick.
Addressing some 400
delegates attending the Na-
tional Convention of
Emunah Women of
America last month, Ger-
shman said that . the
"emerging" U.S. policy on
Israel in the UN repre-
sented a major shift and
radical change from that of
the preceding Administra-
tion.
"The U.S. policy," accord-
ing to Gershman, "portends
less pressure on Israel,
greater discouragement of
PLO terrorism, and a signal
to moderates that the only
course is to make peace with
Israel."

Humanists Slam New Right
WESTPORT, Conn. —
The Association of
Humanistic Rabbis, in a
statement issued at the
group's recent meeting
here, ., have expressed con-
cern regarding the actions
and ambitions of political
religious fundamentalists.
"The future of our demo-
cratic society in America is
in peril," the statement
said. "The resurgent forces
of political religious fun-
damentalism are seeking to
alter the Constitution of the
United States.
"As Americans and as
Jews, we condemn this as-
sault on reason and we af-
firm the value of individual
freedom which is essential
to our democratic heritage."
James Reiter of Far-
mington Hills was elected
president of the Society
for Humanistic Judaism
at concurrent meetings.
Other Detroiters named
to positions were Rabbi
Sherwin Wine of the Bir-
mingham Temple, senior
adviser, Miriam Jerris of

"Secular Humanism in Is-

ence of Secular and
Humanist Jews in Israel
will be held in October.
Holtzman, former U.S.
Representative and visiting
professor at New York Uni-

the recipient of the Jewish

cording to the Metropolitan
Coordinating Council on
Jewish Poverty.
The other American
coach will be Sam Stern of
New York Tech. The team is
expected to supply tough
competition for Israel, the
favorite in the competition
since it has a heavy influx of
former American players
who now are eligible to per-
form as Israelis since they
are dual citizens.
The U.S. aggregation will
be headed by Dan Schayes,
the son of Hall of Famer
Dolph Schayes. (Dolph
Schayes coached the 1977
U.S. Maccabia team.) Sc-
outs from the 23 NBA teams
feel that young Dan, a 7-foot
center, has improved tre-
mendously at Syracuse
University and will be
selected late in the first
round of the June draft.
It is possible that the
team which drafts
Shayes will insist that he
does not play in the Mac-
cabia Games, but young
Schayes is determined to
go back to Israel since he
enjoyed the 1977 tourna-
ment and insists that
he will not be detered
from going with the 1981
squad, regardless of
which team drafts him in
the NBA annual selection
bee.
Another probable NBA
draft choice is Willie Sims of
the Louisiana State Uni-
versity team. Sims, a black
Jew who played at Long Is-
land City High School in
New York, was the hero of
the 1977 championship
game between Israel and
th4J.S. Going into the last
few seconds the Israelis
were leading the United
States by one point when
Sims was fouled as he drove
to the basket. Sims, then a
youngster of 17, calmly
stepped to the line and hit
two successive foul shots to
give the Americans the ti-
tle.
Sims is very proud of his
Jewishness. His family
originally converted several
generations ago, and he is
fairly observant. According
to his teammates at LSU,
Sims observes all the
Jewish holidays.
