Bar-Ilan University Hits New York Jackpot

By TRUDE B. FELDMAN

NEW YORK — A pair of
Jacks won a big hand at the
annual dinner and aca-
demic convocation of Is-
rael's Bar-Han University
last week in New York City.
The event, traditionally one
of the most brilliant of the
season, saw honorary de-
grees conferred upon Sena-
tor Jacob (Jack) K. Javits,
the former ranking Repub-
lican member of the Senate
Foreign Relations Commit-
tee, and Jack D. Weiler, real
estate developer and the
most beloved Jewish
philanthropist of his gener-
ation.
The ballroom of the
Pierre Hotel was the setting
with Jane Stern, president
of Bar-Ilan's American
Board of Overseers, in the
chair. Purple and yellow
balloons floated above each
table with the inscription,
"Bar-Ilan Loves You, Jack."
Mrs. Stern explained that
the balloons were an "affec-
tionate tribute" to both
Jacks — the Jewish Senator
from New York who served
24 years in the Senate, and
the former president of the
Joint Distribution Commit-
tee and other major organ-
izations in American life.
Sen. Javits was pre-
sented with the degree of
Doctor of Laws, honoris
causa, by Dr. Emanuel
Rackman, president of
Bar-Ilan and a veteran
leader of American
Jewry. Dr. Rackman, a
former president of the
Rabbinical Council of
America and New York
Board of Rabbis, hailed
Senator Javits as "an es-
teemed legislator and
courageous spokesman
for social justice and

human dignity" and
spoke of his "long and
distinguished service to
the city, state and nation,
and to the Jewish people
of which he is an illustri-
ous son."
The Senator, seated on
the dais in his academic
robes, rose with some diffi-
culty to the podium. He is
the victim of a degenerative
disease that has made walk-
ing difficult. But when he
reached the podium, his
energy was rekindled and
he delivered a moving ac-
ceptance address, recalling
some of the causes he had
served, and praising Bar-
Ilan University as "one of
the glories of Israel, a uni-
versity that combines the
highest standards of con-
temporary secular schol-
arship with the study of
Judaic heritage."
Sen. Javits called Bar-
Ilan University a "center of
spiritual renewal, a place
where the fundamental
principles of Judaism are
the guiding star by which
Israel's young generation
will build the Jewish state
tomorrow."
The- 77-year-old Javits
also spoke of his mother,
Ida, and described her as
"an indomitable woman
who was able to overcome
any obstacle in her way —
especially when it came to
her children's education.
"Now you, as suppor-
ters of this university in
Israel, are helping
transmit knowledge of
Jewish values to a whole
generation of young
people," he told the audi-
ence of 500 friends and
supporters of Bar-Ilan.
Among those who have
helped build not only Bar-
Ilan University, but other
Jewish institutions in the
United States and -Israel,
including Yeshiva Univer-
sity, the Albert Einstein
College of Medicine and the
United Jewish Appeal is
Jack Weiler. For his labors
on behalf of the Jewish
community, the 75-year-old
Weiler was honored with
the degree of Doctor of Phi-
losophy, honoris causa, in
recognition of an "extraor-
dinary lifetime of commit-
ment and achievement in
service to the Jewish
people."
Rabbi Rackman called
Weiler an "action-oriented
humanitarian who has de-
voted decades of service to
