RAMAT GAN — The use of alternative informal mechanisms in solving dis- putes, instead of court ac- tions, was urged by several speakers at the interdisci- plinary conference on "Ac- cess to Justice in Israel" held at Bar-Ilan University recently. The conference was or- ganized by Prof. Marshall Breger, visiting professor of law, and was held under the joint auspices of the Bar- Ilan Faculty of Law and the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School. This Was the first of a planned series of symposia on lawyers and the legal profession in Israel to be sponsored by both institu- tions. • custom made just for you •. laminates, glass, lucite, marble • tables, wall units, credenzas, etc. • delightfully fine work- { manship • low prices. West of Woodward Ferndale 548-6404 Controllirig Disease of Malaria Is Goal of Hebrew University Researchers JERUSALEM — A breakthrough in the ongo- ing effort to control malaria, one of the world's most prevalent diseases, has been achieved by a team of scientists at the Hebrew University. Until recently, there have been only two methods for handling malaria — get rid of the mosquitos or come up with a drug that will allevi- ate the effects of the mos- quito's bite. The former has been an arduous task, es- pecially in the hot, swampy areas where the insect breeds. As for the latter, through the years, malaria parasites have built up a re- sistance to the several drugs used to combat the virus. These factors have put a stumbling block in the path of eradication or control of the disease. Essential to this program is a fast and vast knowledge of informa- tion on the incidence of the , disease before, during, and at the end of the campaign. Up to now the only means available to study the number and intensity of the infections was through a mass blood testing and time-consuming reading of slides. The Hebrew University team has now come up with — and tested thoroughly — a reliable rapid, inexpensive, and sensitive technique for such diagnosis on a large scale. It is a radioim- munoassay technique, developed by Dr. Dov Sultzeanu of the school's Lautenberg Center for General and Tumor Im- munology; Dr. Dan Spira, of the university's Kuvin Center for the Study of Infectious and Tropical Diseases; Mrs. Hava Av- raham, a doctoral stu- dent, • and their col- leagues. It was tested re- cently in Thailand in the with parallel standard microscopal examination. The antibodies in this serum designed to work against the malarial para- site counteract with the antigen and show up on the highly sensitive radioisotope. For more practical pur- poses, to test a person for malaria, his blood is used in the simple test. The test, at its present stage of develop- jent, can detect as little as one parasite in 100,000 red cells, but further improve- ments now being effected are expected to raise the sensitivity of the assay at least 10 to 100 fold. without Knowledge, common sense, is folly. Without method, it is waste; without kindness, it is fanaticism; without reli- gion, it is death: Masada Never Again By MAURICE CROLL, M.D. High up on the mountain top Far above the scorched desert below As a pinnacle of supreme sacrifice Stands this monument Unto a forlorn beleagured small band of Jews Driven out of their Temples in Jerusalem Who gave their all That freedom among the peoples of the world Shall never perish in their hands And unfettered, unblemished to shine like a beacon of light over the darkness of hate. All around the land is flat Desert land so very dry The winds unhindered sweep this barren land Untamed and wild in all its glory. This fortress Masada L- impregnable Surrounded on all sides By the feared, unconquered mighty, Legion of Rome — the Tenth. Full in armor, so strong, ready to strike One last massive blow Against a mere 960 Jews — civilians Untrained in military ways. Will you cringe cowardly and beg Or will you stand supreme in dignity, And look your assailant in the eye Thrust your dirty spear and be damned to you. Or will you fight to kill And then be surely killed By the unconquered Roman legion Or will you --- It is a thought -- and yet. Eleazor continued "Let them know, "The spirit of these Jews cannot be broken, "So long as we believe in freedom. "Slaves we were in the land of Egypt" But, never again. The elders met each day in forums Let us surrender, Silva will let us live Live in bondage as slaves But, still we will be alive Surely he will not kill us all We must pray to God He will not abandon us And so it went, back and forth Far into the night. Let us die, every man, woman and child Let us die with dignity, ours As we choose to die By our own hands. Eleazor Ben Yair listened patiently To all that was said And when they finished he spoke up He looked carefully into each face "Do you really think we can surrender and live? "Nonsense," he bellowed. "Did not Silva kill 600,000 in Jerusalem, "What matters now — a mere 960 You can fight — you know we cannot win "You can run — they run faster." . 960 men, women and children huddled together for four years Striving each day to keep alive Watched daily the progress of the huge battering ram A monstrous weapon to behold. They watched in anguish Each with sunken hearts Every step, and then they knew, That the fatal day was approaching This impregnable fortress Would fall and then Their words could not be uttered They froze solid in their throat Like solid cubes of ice They coughed, they gagged and sputtered Finally silence reigned supreme. A hushed blanket of silence descended Every eye widened as they looked at one another One smiled, stunned, then another, and then, another One would think, if they suddenly came upon this scene It was a "Simcha" Instead of a funeral dirge. Let them know — let all the Romans know Nay, let the whole world know That they can never be victorious So long as one Jew has The love of freedom in his heart And the "guts" to die with dignity. Let the world know for all ,time That no Roman — even their best legion Cannot conquer here. It is now almost 4 years We are still here General Silva fumes — he had promised Victory in six months. In absolute silence that cloaked their entirety They stared at one another And like the Jews of history, before, they knew Their eyes had understood Oh, how well they knew And yet they could not speak. Let us give him our type of victory By our own hands A victory over 960 Jews Who died willingly with dignity In their hearts When before in history, have Jews died thus? This time let us choose. What does one do when sudden violent death Is just one step away? There are no rules, there are no guides Do you stand and wait for that infernal thruit of spear? Or, will they take their spoils, Violate and then the spear? Can you imagine the look on their faces, When they come charging in With ready spears held high, They will have to eat their useless spears And we shall be victors Even in death. Let no Roman defile your woman or children Never forget, Have you seen a baby speared to death, I have," Eleazor thundered Each family will destroy its own Then say your prayers and let the Lord know That we are coming unto him_ With peace in our hearts. Tomorrow the Roman battering rams will be upon us We can no longer keep them at bay. Go to yoizr houses — arrange everything in order Let not the children see their mother or father Or a mother see her children, Give them each a strong drink of wine In separate rooms Dress in your best raiment Let them know we are not beggars. His voice broke — tears took over — he walked away To shake each hand. The assembly dispersed First to the Synagogue For — Ma-Arev — all attended Then to their homes in silence To make peace with God They dress in their finest raiments To show the conquering Romans' how proud they were, And not in mourning. Addenda: "Two Sins" First Sin: Suicide is against the Law of the Jews Second Sin: In death the orthodox Jews are not supposed to be dressed in their best. They are sup- posed to lie naked on the floor covered by a sheet. You go back to your maker in the same fashion as you were. Before God, all are equal. P.S. I have a strong feeling both sins would be forgiven. M.C.
