Begin Inaugurates Canal

JERUSALEM — A call to
King- Hussein of Jordan to
join in a peaceful partner-
ship with Israel in proceed-
ing on the Mediterranean-
Dead Sea Canal project was
issued recently by Prime
Minister Menahem Begin
at ceremonies at Har Ben
Ya'ir near Masada inau-
gurating drilling on the
canal hydroelectric station
site.
Begin addressed an audi-
ence of 1,000, including the
seventh annual European
Israel Bonds Conference
and a large group of Canal
founders.
The Prime Minister fore-
cast that the canal would
revive the whole southern
Negev and added, "What-
ever we say will be forgot-
ten, but what we start here
today will be remembered
for all time to come." He
then opened a copy of
Herzl's "Altneuland," a
novel which envisioned the
building of the canal, and
held up a map in the book of
the projected canal route for
the audience to see.

bration of the 30th year of
Israel Bond activities.
"The plans for a canal to
link the Mediterranean
with the Dead Sea represent
an engineering challenge of
dramatic scope," Rothberg
said. "The canal project of-
fers concrete proof of the
imagination, resourceful-
ness and determination of
the people of Israel — the
basic qualities and virtues
which have been the -cor-
nerstone of the creation and
growth of the State of Is-
rael."
