volvements into hatred for
Israel, as propagated by the
Saudis, would be harmful to
American interests and to
world peace.
Novick addressed a
luncheon meeting attended
by Metropolitan Detroit
area rabbis and spoke at
Sabbath Eve services at
Cong. Beth Shalom, after
installation of the new offi-
cers of the Detroit District of
the Zionist Organization of
America.
Rabbi David Nelson
conducted the service
and presided at the in-
stallation which marked
induction into the
presidency of Irving
Laker. Sidney Silverman
is the outgoing ZOD
president.
At a press conference Fri-
day afternoon, Novick at-
tributed the recent growth
of the ZOA to the new,
young leadership joining
the movement and the
popularity of ZOA positions
and the organization's high
visibility. _
It-is significant," he said,
"-that iiii.a)ear when other
organizations ''(itre seeing a
reduction of membership,
and when our dues have
gone up 40 percent, our
membership has increased
15 percent."
The ZOA now has 150,000
members.
Novick said the ZOA has
"projected its image in a
more positive manner, we
have been right on the is-
sues, and I have been a full-
time, working president."
He said the new leader-
ship joining the ranks are
not just philanthropists
or fund-raisers, but are
committed to the cause of
Zionism. He said the
organization "is truly a
grass-roots movement"
but he also credited the
ZOA's professional staff
for its organization and
preparation of materials.
Novick said more Jews
are identifying with Israel
as it faces "the most serious
problems of its 33 years, in-
cluding isolation. The
people are fighting to pre-
sent Israel's viewpoint."
