may be a treat for those who
enjoy spicy Szechuan dis-
hes. But if you can do with-
out the hot stuff and the
waitress says you can order
a meal more on the bland
side, you're liable to still get
the spiciest Szechuan that
ever burned your tongue.
That's a real turnoff.
SPEAKING OF WAIT-
RESSES, they're a vital
ingredient in any restau-
rant operation and if you get
a good one you're likely to
frequent that eating spot
again and recommend it to
your friends.
Like one of the gals at the
Lemon Peel on Hunter in
Birmingham who suggests
two women lunchers share
the regular size Greek salad
because it's plenty to eat. A
waitress at Roberto's on
Coolidge Highway in
Berkley recommends the
same thing for the antipasto
salad.
This is a money saver and
it makes you feel that you're
not being taken for every
buck the eating spot can get
out of you. It's also a nice
thing for the generation
brought up to not waste food
because of all the children
starving in China.
Before Lelli's enlarged,
waiters who dashed around
trying to satisfy customers
on hectic Saturday nights
suggested you come on week
nights instead to get better
service and really enjoy the
Italian cuisine. Waiters
seemed to really take pride
in the cooking at this popu-
lar ethnic spot and wanted
you to savor the best of it.
Since the expansion,
Saturday nights are still
pack-'em-in times. But
the waiters seem less
patient and anxious to
please. Maybe we or-
dered the wrong dish —
sweetbreads which leave
much to be desired. We
asked about them and
our waiter brusquely
said, "Everything at Lel-
li's is excellent."
We swapped the sweet-
breads for eggplant par-
migiana and it too was dis-
appointing. We were em-
barrassed to send it back.
But the waiter seemed more
concerned about his tip than
whether or not we were
satisfied with the dinner.
Larco's on Six Mile in
Detroit isn't as busy as Lel-
li's. The portions are
smaller but the quality of
the food hasn't changed.
If you're an Italian food
aficionado, Aldo's on Kelly
Rd. in Detroit is for you. Ev-
erything from the pasta to
the spumoni in this little
mom-and-pop dining spot is
lip-smacking and the at-
mosphere is cozy. You'd bet-
ter make reservations.
Capraro's Italian Den
on John R. and Maple in
Troy specializes in veal
parmigiana, piccanti,
marsala and home made
lasagna and ravioli.
If you're looking for a fine
dining spot, Excalibur on 12
Mile and Northwestern is
the place. It's a popular res-
QUESTIONS AND
ANSWERS ... by Joan
Wittenberg of Healthy
Jones:
What is the name of the
booklet that is supposed
to be so helpful in telling
about how much salt is in
our food?
It is called "The Sodium
Content of Your Food" and
it lists almost 800 items and
the sodium content of each.
It costs $1 and is available
from Cornell Distribution
Center, 7 Research Park,
Ithaca, New York 14850.
Checks should be made
payable to Cornell Univer-
sity.
I am trying to convert
my baking from using
sugar to honey, can you
help me?
One cup of white sugar
may be replaced with one-
half to three-fourths cup
honey and you must also re-
duce other liquids by one-
fourth cup. Also reduce your
oven temperature by 25° F.
as it has a tendency to make
things brown faster.
