CARLOS MURPHY'S,
12 Mile and Northwestern,
is more than an ethnic ad-
venture in supping and sip-
ping. It's a comic legend.
Nobody's sure where the
name Carlos Murphy comes
from. It isn't every day you
read a menu decorated with
Shamrocks and pictures of
gay Caballeros in som-
breros and serapes guzzling
Irish beer.
Legend has it that Carlos
is the son of a ditch digger
from Dublin who left the
Emerald Isle to seek his for-
tune in Juarez.
But Carlos' padre, the
product of a rich
Mexican-Irish heritage,
soon got the message that
there were no fortunes to
be found in Juarez.
As luck of the Irish would
have it, papa met and fell in
love with the beautiful
young daughter of Juarez's
leading hub-cap magnate.
They were married on St.
Patrick's Day and soon be-
came the proud parents of a
red-haired, black-eyed boy
named Carlos. He weighed
a six-pack and 1 1/2 ounces.
Carlos led an uneventful
life until his traumatic 18th
birthday when his parents
decided to move and didn't
tell him where. Raised
on a steady diet of Mulligan
Stew, refried beans and
Tequila, Carlos was used to
being alone.
Carlos decided to explore
abroad and seek his fortune.
But he wasn't as lucky as
his father and couldn't find
a broad with a fortune. So he
left for America with 17
pesos, a swim suit and the
last words his father said to
him: "Don't drink the water
and never water your
drink."
Carlos traveled the
country, getting thrown
out of every bar between
California, Mexico City
and Indiana. Finally he
ended up in Southfield.
But something was
wrong. Everyplace Carlos
went was like a siesta. And
he wanted a fiesta. "Blarney
Con Came," he exclaimed.
"Sure 'n dis town needs una
cantina grande."
So Carlos decided to make
fun a business and soon the
doors to Carlos Murphy's
were opened. Carlos hopes
the fiesta never ends and if
you don't drink the water,
he won't water your drinks.
So much for the legend.
Now for the menu. If you've
got a craving for something
with a little bit of Irish,
you'll have to settle for
Shamrock salad or lamb
stew. But if you're a Mexi-
can food aficionado, you'll
have a fiesta.
For an appetizer,
Quesadilla is one hot
item. It's a piping hot tor-
tilla filled with melted
cheese and garnished
with guacamole, sour
cream and green chilies.
You can't go wrong with
Taquitos which are tacos
rolled, deep fried and topped
with sour cream, diced to-

matoes, scallions, Cheddar
cheese and black olives.
Nachos are crisp tortilla
chips that snap like marac-
cas and are garnished with
cheddar and Monterey Jack
cheese, green chilies and
tomatoes and topped with
sour cream.
You can feast on a host of
Mexican combinations
which include Steak Bur-
rito, Tortilla Pizza, Torta,
Super Quesadilla,
Chimichanga, Tostada
Suprema and Enchilladas
