THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS - Friday; June 5, 1%1 , 23' FRANKLIN PLAZA. MAD MIDNIGHT. FRIDAY, JUNE 5th. FRANKLIN PLAZA. MAD MIDNIGHT. FRIDAY, JUNE 5th Between You . . . and Me' Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, JTA' (Copyright 1981, JTA, Inc.) AN IDEAL EDITOR: Congratulations to my dear friend and colleague Philip Slomovitz, editor of The Jewish News in Detroit, on the occasion of the decision of Bar-Ilan University to confer upon him an honorary doctorate in recognition for his record of service to the Jewish people and the Jewish heritage. Phil, as he is affectionately called by his many friends, illy deserves this honor. He is the most recognized editor n the field of English-Jewish weekly publications in this country. He enjoys the admiration of his own community and high respect of national Jewish organizations. He is venerated by leaders of the American Zionist movement to which he is very dedicated, and he is regarded with high esteem by the Israel government. Recognition of the American Jewish community was given to him by selecting him as the first recipient of the Smolar Award for Excellence in North American Jewish Journalism which was established in 1972 by the Council of Jewish Federations. Phil was also the recipient last month of the Golda Meir Award presented by the American Jewish Press Association. I always admired Phil for his many qualities in the field of journalism which brought fame to him and his newspaper. His qualities, as I see them, are: • He is erudite in Jewish knowledge. • He is deeply devoted to all Jewish causes and encourages all creative forces in American Jewry. His newspaper provides excellent coverage of all local communal events. He features with excellent judg- ment national and international news reported by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. He concentrates on covering local organizational news from mere publicity into news of a national character, thus putting his community on the Jewish map nationally and even internationally. • His editorials are written against a background of solid knowledge of reported and "inside" news. They are analytical, informative, far from pontificating; they stimu- late thinking. He never seeks to make an impression that he speaks on behalf of the Jewish people. Without saying so, he makes it clear that the opinions expressed in the editorials are personal. His own feature, "Purely Commen- tary," as well as the features he carefully selects for inter- preting the news contain significant observations. • He takes a personal, active interest in various pro- grams of his own community and of national organizations, and enjoys the confidence of national Jewish leaders and of leaders in Israel. He is, therefore, well informed on what is going on "behind the scenes" in Jewish life. • He pays special attention to Jewish cultural de- velopments; his paper carries more reviews on books of Jewish content and interest than any other English-Jewish newspaper. He is a lover of Hebrew but also attentive to problems and achievements in the field of Yiddish lan- guage and literature. • In his own community he is recognized not merely as a most responsible editor who helps to build and develop the community, but also as a person who is part-and-parcel of the leadership of the community. He and his wife Anna are known as generous givers to various Jewish causes in which they are actively interested, including the commu- nity campaign for local needs and the United Jewish Ap- peal, the Jewish National Fund, Hadassah, and others. AN IDEAL COMMUNITY: More and more could be said about Phil. He is a great asset to the Detroit Jewish community which lilas always distinguished itself on the American Jewish scene. The Detroit community has enriched American Jewry not only with an exceptionally good newspaper but also with outstanding national Jewish leaders. It produced a Max Fisher who is today the "leader Number One" in American Jewish life. It has given Jewry and Israel a Philip Stollman, the modest and great Orthodox philan- thropist who, in a quiet way, gives probably three times as much of his income for charity than the 10 percent — the "Maaser" — prescribed by the Bible, and who is the dynamo of the Bar-Ilan University, sparing no efforts in time and in funds to make the university what it is today and even bigger. Detroit is also the home of Paul Zuckerman, who is so busy with the United Jewish Appeal. Its community-active U.S. Senator Carl Levin, plays now a very important role in Washington. Detroit has pro- duced such distinguished Jewish social workers as Morris D. Waldman, Dr. John Slawson, Isidore Sobeloff, William Avrunin. I am proud to be considered an "honorary member" of the Detroit community. AN EDITOR AT 70: Speaking of honored Jewish editors, the 70th birthday of Shimon Weber, editor of the Jewish Daily Forward, the only Yiddish daily newspaper in the United States — well known all over the world and playing an important role in American Jewish life — was celebrated in New York this week.
