The Holy Temple cannot be rebuilt in Jerusalem now that the state of Israel has possession of the city. From a halakhic view- point some commentaries on the Talmud indicate that the building of the new temple must be an act of the Almighty and not a human act (Rashi and Tosafot Trac- tate Sukka 41a). Tosafot commentary_ explicitly states that it is a structure which will be done by itself. N IM Maimonides (M'lachim 11:1) indicates that the Messiah will build the new temple. This would mean that as long as the Messiah has not come there can be no temple, since he has to build it. It is. not only that the Messiah, as a person, has not yet arrived. The world conditions that would pre- pare the universe for the coming of the Messiah have not occurred yet. Both the Messiah and the temple are merely results of a new world of peace and honor that have yet to come. Convaleseeni)cliame/ J WASIIINC;TON May 21, 1981 I am pleased to send my warm personal greetings to the American Assembly for Zionism and Israel. I welcome this opportunity to commend the Zionist Movement for building a society rooted in the democratic ideals shared by our country, and I support, as have my predecessors, the establishment of a modern Jewish state on the site of the ancient Jewish homeland. Israel is "a major strategic asset, a staunch ally whose military strength stands as a deterrent to Soviet aggression in the Middle East. When our country enhances Israel's security with military assistance, economic aid and diplomatic support, we advance our strategic interests and - contribute to the preservation of peace and stability in the region. . Zionism is the expression of your commitment to redeem the-land of Israel and to - build a state, economy, and society that will achieve the cultural revitalization, spiritual renewal and economic self- determination of. the Jewish people in a nation dedicated to democracy and liberty for her people. I join the many who are expressing solidarity with those who are building a democratic,.free, and stable society in a part of the world that As essential to American security. Again, you have - my best wishes for a successful and productive meeting. Sincerely, Etzion Block Was Savior of Jerusalem LOU15 "BLOCK N.\ pa_ Till.: WHITE 110USE Rebuilding of the Temple Must Wait for the Messiah 718 W. Fourth Street, Royal Oak, Michigan 48067 (313) 545 - 0571 exists today and the enemy did not succeed in giving a death blow to the newly- born Jewish state, it was due to the heroic defenders of the Etzion Block, Ben- Gurion said. The children of the dead fighters of the block used to climb Mount Zion on each anniversary of the fall of the block to look at the block. Immediately after the Six- Day War in June 1967, when the block was liber- ated, they organized them- selves to return to the home of their dead parents and to build up the block again. They fulfilled their promise and returned home. This year the new settlements of the block celebrated their Bar Mitzva. In 13 years they have succeeded in build- ing prosperous settle- ments. Around an old tree, which had been alone during the Jorda- nian occupation of 19 years, hundreds of new trees have been planted and have given fruit. The children of those days are today fathers of children who have mostly been born in the new Etzion Block. One of them, Shalom Kar- niel, is a grandson of Shalom Karniel of Cracow, a founder of Kfar Etzion who was killed by the Arabs with 127 other heroes. Today there are four kibutzim. in the block: Kfar Etzion, Rosh Zurim, Migdal Oz and Tekoa. Near these settlements a new city was built: Efrat. Close by is Moshav Elazar, in which mostly American immig- rants have settled. In the center of all these settle- ments is Alon Shwut with a big yeshiva, where soldiers of the Israeli Army study Talmud. Shila Gal was five- years-old when his father was killed defending the Etzion Block against the Jordanian Legion. He now has his own family. "We are a connection-point between Jerusalem, Hebron and Beersheva," he told us. "We are planning to establish some new settlements: Har Gila, Maale Amoz and Mitzpe Govrin." Shila and his comrades are the pioneers of today who are building and realizing a dream. Only four defenders of Kfar Etzion are alive to- day. The Arabs de- stroyed the block in 1948 and 320 members of the settlements were taken prisoner. The wounded were transferred to a hospital in Bethlehem. They stayed there for two months anti were re- turned to Hebron and Jordan, joining the rest of the prisoners for 11 months' captivity. In the beginning the pris- oners were treated badly, but afterwards better rela- tions developed between them and the prison authorities. When the news about the mass-slaughter in the block reached Jerusalem, the political chairman of the Jewish Agency, Moshe Sharet, ap- pealed to British UN dele- gate Alexander Cadogan to order the British military authorities in Palestine to defend the Jewish settlers against the Arabs. Cadoga answered that the settler of the Etzion-Block had started the shootings. In the Etzion Block today there are 450 persons, 55 families and 180 children. The area has 17,000 dunams of agriculture, cat- tle, fruit orchards, etc. There are some electronic and metal enterprises. In 1948, the whole popu- lation of the Yishuv watched the heroic struggle and tragedy of the Etzion Block. This year, thousands of Jews took part in the Bar Mitzva celebrations. The president of Israel, Yit- zhak Navon, was present at the celebration.
