I talked with Milchan
who reveals the develop-
ment of four multi-million
dollar pictures, foremost
"Queen Story" in conjunc-
tion with Richard Dreyfuss'
company, with Dreyfuss
co-authoring the screenplay
with Sue De Puccio and por-
traying the central char-
acter.
The yarn deals with a
young idealist who wants to
do something about the liv-
ing conditions of the poor.
He takes things into his own
hands by moving into Har-
lem and re-building a
broken-down tenement
thereby challenged by
high-powered interests of
local real estate owners.
"Queen Story" is termed a
battle of survival.
Through his New York
based film company Mil-
chan is preparing a new
Martin Scorsese picture,
"King of Comedy," co-
starring Robert De Niro
and Jerry Lewis, to the tune
of $15,000,000, from a
screenplay by Paul Zim-
merman with a Twentieth
Century-Fox release.
In Italy and the U.S., he
plans to produce Sergio
Leone's "Once Upon a Time
in America," a gangster
story about the lives of two
men from 1920 to 1965
based on the novel, "The
Hoods" by Harry Gray with
Norman Mailer one of the
screenplay authors. Warner
Bros. will release the pic-
ture in the States for the
Ladd Company.
In Israel, he is heading
Roman Polanski's
forthcoming film 'Ti?

swashbucker to be filmed
early next year throughout
the Holy Land with addi-
tional exteriors in Thailand
and studio work in France.

scenario with Gerard Brach

who also collaborated with
him on "Tess."
Milchan, who owns 30
petro-chemical and aero-
space research plants in 17
countries, was also the driv-
ing force behind the eight-
hour television epic,
"Masada," co-produced by
him with Universal for
ABC-TV to be released out-
side the U.S. as a theatrical
feature in a condensed ver-
sion. He has, for a number of
years, financed and co-
produced films but hardly, if
ever, before taken any sc-
reen credit.
ED WYNN was honored
at the celebration of the
"50th Anniversary of the
Texaco Star Theatre" by the
Society for the Preservation
of Variety Arts in Los
Angeles. As the oriiinal
Texaco Fire Chief on radio,
Ed Wynn received his first
check, then an unheard of
large sum, of $5,000 on
April 24, 1931. A replica of
the check is now in the Ed
Wynn lobby of the Society,
together with hundreds of
framed pictures, including
his earliest hand-tinted
vaudeville poses and radio
plays of the 30's and 40's.
Wynn's career spanned a
period of over a half a cen-
tury of vaudeville, Broad-
way shows, radio and tele-
vision. He was the first
major star to go on radio on
a regular basis and one of
the first in the medium of
television as early as 1949.
He was on the opening bill
of the New York Palace
Theatre on March 25, 1913.
During the latter part of his
career, he became a serious
screen performer and ren-
dered heart-breaking por-
trayals in "Requiem for a
Heavyweight" and "The
Dairy of Anne Frank."
MARTIN POLL'S pic-
ture, "Nighthawks," with
the urgency of today's head-
lines, brings to the screen a
chilling account of interna-
tional terrorists invading
the United States to create
havoc in the UN building
and throughout the streets
of New York. Written by
David Shaber and Paul Syl-
bert, the hard-hitting story
pulls no punches in expos-
ing the intrigue of foreign
mercenaries hird to under-
mine Western civilization;
men and women who will
stop at nothing — even
using babies as bait in their
kidnapping schemes.
Sylvester Stallone ap-
pears in the role of a police
sergeant playing it straight,
without his usual prize-
fighter mannerism and
mumbling. Persis Kham-
batta, the East-Indian
beauty from "Star Trek," is
the female companion in
crime of a Germanic giant
called "Wulfgar," leader of a
terrorist gang from central
Europe, portrayed with ob-
sessive intensity by Rutger
Hauer who is remembered
for the title role in the
Dutch picture, "Soldier of
Orange." Bruce Malmuth
makes his debut as a feature
film director.

The lead editorial in the
