The present play, very dangerous to American and Israeli secu- rity, involves the sale of 200 XM-1 ultra-modern tanks to the Saudis. Technical superiority in tanks and in the air gave the Israelis the edge in de- feating the aggressor forces in the previous attacks of 1967 and 1973. Totally out- numbered in manpower, Is- rael has overcome the dis- advantage by superiority in tanks and airplanes, backed by what Golda Meir called "our secret weapon" — the knowledge that Israel could not afford to lose. Most Americans do not follow even important debates overseas and are unaware of the raging debate of the last six months in West Germany. The German Federal Re- public, which depends upon Saudi Arabia for 27 percent of its fuel oil, has been under tremendous pressure to sell Leopard II tanks to the Saudis. The sale would help the West German economy, recently sagging, and it would lift some of the pressure from the oil blackmailers headed by Sheikh Yamani of Saudi Arabia. All of Western Europe is excruciatingly vulnerable to this blackmail, so long as the U.S. has no energy pol- icy for itself and its allies. Helmut Chancellor Schmidt made a special trip to Riyadh, however, to ex- plain that West Germany could not accept the moral responsibility — after the German record during the Holocaust — for supplying the best tanks in the world to a government still calling for a "Holy War" against Is- rael. It was a costly decision, long debated in the news- papers and in the Bonn par- liament and cabinet. The East German gov- ernment, controlled by an anti-Semitic Communist leadership, has of course had no such compunction. They regularly supply ad- vanced equipment, after the Russians and Cubans have had their pick, to the PLO and aggressive govern- ments of the Arab League. "American" arms manufacturers feel no such compunctions about supplying aggres- sor governments, either. As this column has prev- iously outlined, there is no reason why the U.S. gov- ernment should continue in its failure to free America and its allies from the pres- sure of oil blackmail, so de- structive of American interests on the world map. We have the reserves to build a stockpile. We have the alternative sources. But so far our national adminis- trations have utterly failed to develop a suitable energy policy. It looks as though only Is- rael and the German Fed- eral Republic have the moral strength to resist those threatening the secu- rity of the West. The Israelis and the West Germans have shown cour- age in dealing with ter- rorism, from Entebbe to Mogadishu to suppression of the Nazi "Hoffmann Sportsverein" in Bavaria. In the U.S., 80 percent of German-language Nazi propaganda is printed in and distributed from Lincoln, Neb. The KKK and Nazis are allowed to train and organize para-military bands to threaten the lives and liberties of loyal citizens. And internationally our profiteers are allowed to arm the enemies of the Free World, even to the extent of undercutting a friendly ally whose gov- ernment remembers the past and is trying to lift the burden of the past from the human con- science. I repeat: Will the Reagan Mosque Re-opens TEL AVIV (JTA) — The Al-Jazzar mosque in Acre, built in 1781 by Ahmad Al- Jazzar (the butcher) Pasha and held to be the most beautiful in Israel, was reopened last week after re- novations paid for mainly by the government. The ceremony was attended by President lit- zhak Navon and hundreds of Jewish, Moslem, Chris- tian and Druze spiritual leaders, judges and heads of Arab local councils. One of the most sacred relics held by the mosque and on dis- play in a glass cabinet is a hair from the beard of the Prophet Mohammed. The agreement to organize a Jewish-Hispanic coalition to work for these goals came following a recent confer- ence at Stephen Wise Con- gress House here. Administration check those who seek quick profits in disregard of the internal and external well-being of America? Will the oil cartels, which have used their uncons- cionable profits to build larger industrial amalga- mations rather than expand energy sources, be forced into line with the national interest? Will the arms industry, Blintzes which would sell to the Soviets as quickly as to the Saudi Arabians if given the chance, be controlled by concern for American secu- rity? Or shall we continue to see, as we saw under Nixon and Ford and Carter, an administration in Washing- ton that is too weak to pro- tect the American people from internal predators and external aggressors? A Shavuot Treat Dairy foods are eaten on Shavuot, the holiday commemorating the giving of the 10 Commandments to Moses on Mt. Sinai. The reason for this tradition is that the Torah is compared to milk and honey, the same words used to describe the Land of Israel in the Bible. A traditional dairy treat for Shavuot is blintzes. * * * Cream Cheese Blintzes 1 cup milk 3 /4 cup flour 3 eggs, beaten 3 tbsps. Parkay margarine melted 1 tbsp. sugar 1 /4 tsp. salt 1 8-oz. pkg.
