Numismatists
Meet Tuesday

Late Si Weingarden Held Celebrity Status

The Israel Numismatic
Society of Michigan, Inc.,
will have a meeting 8 p.m.
Tuesday in the Jimmy Pre-
ntis Morris Branch of the
Jewish Community Center,
Room 13.
Dr. H. Saul Sugar will
present a slide lecture on
The First European Anti-
Semitic Tokens and Med-
als."
The public is invited free
of charge.

Judges knew him. Politi-
cians knew him. Store own-
ers knew him. For four de-
cades the late Si Weingar-
den was a downtown Detroit
notable — at the newsstand
he operated in front of the
Majestic Building, which
was a meeting place for the
newsmakers and the news-
readers.
Mr. Weingarden, who
died May 5 just shy of his
100th birthday, will be
memorialized at a special
service 5p.m. Monday in
the small chapel at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek. Rabbi Irwin
Groner will officiate.
According to his daugh-
ter, Charlotte Brandimore
of Detroit, Mr. Weingarden
was one of the world's best
known newsboys. She said
there was a time when Mr.
Weingarden's newsstand
was the largest in the world.
