Bombing Recalled
in New Volume
from Pantheon

In "Unforgettable Fire," a
volume edited by the Japan
Broadcasting Association
and published by Pantheon
Books, survivors of the
Hiroshima atomic bomb
share their feelings and
memories.
Thirty years later, these
survivors still live with the
memory of that moment
painfully etched in their
minds. Some still hear
"phantom voices crying for
help." Others cannot erase a
single, painful image: a
dying boy calling out for
water or a spouse or child
left pinned in a flaming
house. In the more than 100
drawings and the brief,
often wrenching descrip-
tions which accompany
them, the Hiroshima ex-
perience is invoked.
The art in this book was a
response to a request broad-
cast on a morning television
program in Japan for draw-
ings from atomic bomb sur-
vivors. It is tied together
with photographs and
maps, bringing the incident
that prompted the end of
World War II to life.
