Sadat Re-Affirms
Peace in Cable
to Pres. Navon

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
President Anwar Sadat of
Egypt sent an Independence
Day message earlier this
month to.President Yitzhak
Navon assuring Israel that
Egypt remains "firmly de-
termined" to pursue the pol-
icy of peace for all the
peoples of the region.
Among messages from
other heads of state was one
from President Valery Gis-
card d'Estaing wishing Is-
rael "a happy future."

Samuel C. Kovan, past
president of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, will be jointly hon-
ored by the Jewish Theolog-
ical Seminary of America
and the congregation at a
reception 4 p.m. Thursday,
according to chairman
Leonard Baron.
Kovan, who is being cited
for "his commitment to
Jewish education and com-
munal service," was chosen
by acclamation. Kovan
served as president of the
congregation from 1967 to
1969 and presently serves
on the board of trustees of
the Clover Hill Park
Cemetery. He also serves as
a trustee of the Morris Adler
Memorial Foundation.
Born in Detroit, he is a
graduate of Detroit College
of Law and has been a
member of the Michigan
State Bar for over 50 years.

Rosenberg, vice chancel-
lor of the seminary, will
be guest speaker at the

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The House Financial Aid
Committee, for the first
time, has approved provid-
ing a portion of the loan
money to Israel for military
aid at a reduced rate of
interest.
An amendment, steered
through the committee by
Rep. Stephen Solarz (D-
N.Y.)Twould lend Israel $50
million of the foreign mili-
tary aid for fiscal year 1982,
beginning Oct. 1, on "con-
cessional terms" at three
percent interest. The re-
mainder of the $900 million
vloan fQr military aid would
be provided at 14 percent.

TORONTO (JTA) — The
Yiddish weekly in Win-
nipeg, "Dos Yiddishe Vort,"
which was alternately
known as the "Yiddish
Press" and before that as
the "Israelite Press," has
ceased publication after 70
years.
A spokesman for the
weekly said that although
Winnipeg still has a reputa-
tion as ,a stronghold of Yid-
dish, the paper had run out
of readers, revenue and
support. It was losing
$2,000 a month and had
only 1,600 subscribers.
The spokesman said the
only other Yiddish new
paper in Canada, ti _
"Eagle" in Montreal, re-
ceives support from the
Quebec government.

Jewish Theological Semi-
nary is the academic,
spiritual and cultural cen-
ter for the Conservative
Movement in Judaism. Its
campuses are in New York,
Los Angeles and Jerusalem.

10 Jews Win in S. Africa

JOHANNESBURG
(JTA) — Last month's gen-
eral election in South Africa
confirmed that there is no
"Jewish vote" in this coun-
try. While the 10 successful
Jewish candidates for Par-
liament and the provincial
councils are all members of
the Progressive Federal
Party, the liberal opposi-
tion, Jewish candidates ran
on other tickets as well.
Of the 20 Jews nominated
for office, the governing
rightwing National Party
headed by Prime Minister
P.W. Botha fielded two
Jewish candidates and
others ran on the even more
conservative New Republic
Party ticket. The National
Party, which has governed
South Africa since 1948;
won the election.
Except for several ill-
chosen remarks by the far
right Hersigte Nationale
Party, the campaign was
singularly free of Jewish is-
sues or angles. The close
and cordial relationship be-
tween South Africa and Is-
rael was endorsed by all
major factions and was not
an issue.

New Ambassador

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel Ambassador Moshe
Sasson arrived in Egypt on
Sunday to take up his new
post.
Sasson, an experienced
Arabist and career dip ,
lomat, replaced Eliahu
Ben-Elissar, who resigned
to run in next month's
Knesset elections on the
Likud list.
Agriculture -Minister
Ariel Sharon was. in Egypt
this week in response to a
long standing invitation.
