Outstanding Steinberg-Chalat Concert
Perpetuates Traditional Jewish Music

By HEIDI PRESS
Through the generosity of
Myron Steinberg, an out-
standing concert of Jewish
music was presented Sun-
day evening at Temple Is-
rael as the annual Mildred
S. Steinberg-Andrew R.
Chalat Memorial Concert.
The concert is a memorial
tribute to Steinberg's wife
and grandson.
Entitled the "Art of the
Cantor," Sunday's program
was a presentation of
talented cantors, male and
female, whose origins were
idespread.
Probably the most mov-
ing performance of the eve-

ning came from Mikhail
Alexandrovich. Once si-
lenced in the Soviet Union,
he travels widely to sing
Hebrew and Yiddish canto-
rial melodies.
His soft tenor voice
proved soothing as it
sounded throughout the
nearly filled 1,000-seat
sanctuary. His greatest
moment came at the con-
clusion of "Lo Teyda Mil-
chama" when he was
greeted with a standing
ovation and shouts of
"bravo." Alexan-
drovich's rendition of
"Dos Yiddishe Lied"
moved the audience to
hand-clapping in
rhythm, and at the con-
clusion he was treated to
another ovation.
Alexandrovich's per-
formance also included "A
Havas Olom," "Al
Harishonim" and "Kinder
Yorn." When Cantor Harold
Orbach, who was behind the
movement - to rescue
Alexandrovich from the
Soviet Union, asked for an
encore, Alexandrovich re-
plied, "I can resist a lot of
women, but not this man."
He sang an aria, "Lament
de Frederico," by Cilea.

Cantor Orbach was the
evening's master of cere-
monies, and the audience
was treated to his vocal ta-
lents as well. His opening

number was "Three Can-
tors," and his pleasant style
and resonant presentation
earned him deserved
applause.
, Another treat of the
evening came with the
appearance of Cantor
Sarah Sager. She ap-
peared comfortable on
the stage and her beauti-
fully mellow voice car-
ried the tunes with ease.
Before each of her songs,
she gave an explanation
of its origin or content.
She sang the high notes
forcefully and perhaps the
result of her training as a
singer was emphasized in
the trilled notes of "A Din
Toire" which were so effec-
tive it was hard not to feel
the very "tam" of Jewish
music.
Issachar Miron's "Ki Mi
Tzion" was among her selec-
tions, as were "A Nigun,"
"Elu D'varim" and "If I
Forget Thee." A refreshing
change from the traditional
male-only cantorial con-
certs, Cantor Sager de-
servedly earned the swel-
ling applause that an ap-
preciative audience ten-
dered her.
Cantor Norman Sum-
mers, a baritone, paid trib-
ute to Detroiter Julius
Chajes by including Chajes'
"Old Jerusalem" in his re-
pertoire. Summer seemed
more restrained on stage
than the others, but the
Jewish "neshama" was in-
voked through the sincerity
with which he sang. His
presentation was smooth,
yet forceful and caused Or-
bach to quip, "If I had a voice
like that I'd be ashazzan."
Summers' repertoire
included "Elohai
N'Shoma," "Entreat Me
Not to Leave Thee," "A
Zemer" and "Yo Adir."
One of the evening's
lighter moments came with
the playing of Ernest
Bloch's "Wedding March"
performed on the organ by
13-year-old Scott Stern.
Removing his shoes so they
would not click against the
pedals during his perform-
ance, Scott easily managed
the volume changes and
pedal playing, in a display
of talent ,..hat was met with
warm applause.

David Wilson, the accom-

piano music throughout the
evening, and twice Alexan-

bows during his perform-
ance.
Opening remarks were
made by Rabbi M. Robert
Syme, and Rabbi Harold
Loss - thanked the
Steinberg-Chalat Families
on behalf of the congrega-
tion.
At the conclusion of the
concert, Rabbi Leon
Fram remarked that
Cantor Sager's. appear-
ance marked "a revolu-
tion" since women are
admitted in the cantorate
and that women are able
to perform in a cantorial
concert with their male
counterparts. He re-
ferred to her appearance
at the temple as "passage
of ERA in the temple."
Cantor Orbach made ac-
knowledgements and the
evening's artists were again
greeted to a standing ova-
tion.
