But in Poland, where the number of Jews has dwin- dled to 6,000-7,000, and Bulgaria, with only 5,300 Jews, Spitzer said there are only "remnant" com- munities which may,disap- pear in the next 25 years. But he said the govern- ments of all four Corn- munist countries were pledged to maintain the Jewish - culture that had- existed in these countries for centuries. The most immediate problem discussed by Spitzer at a press conference last Friday at Bnai Brith headquarters was the most-favored-nation trade - status for Romania which the United States must renew annually, , MDA Recognition Effort Endorsed by White House MIAMI' BEACH — President Reagan has endorsed Rabbi Rubin R. Dobin's Operation Recogni- tion program, which asks that the Internationl Red Cross recognize Israel's Magen David Adorn (MDA) as a full fledged member. The endorsement came in a message from the White House which stated in part, "I hope your work to help it (MDA) achieve full recogni- tion . . . will be successful. The United States Govern- ment fully supports these goals." The International Red Cross refuses to recognize MDA because the Israeli organization uses a red Shield of David rather than the traditional emblem. However, other countries use their own emblems and are still recognized. RAMAT GAN — Accord- ing to a study by the school' of education at Bar-Ilan University the development of a baby may be enhanced through early admission to nurseries when the mother lacks higher education. Research on the develop- ment of children of working mothers by Dr. Pnina Klein, director of early education studies at Bar-Ilan, has shown that the mother's schooling determines the relative benefits or disad- vantages of placing a baby in a day care center. The de- velopment of 38 tots who entered Tel Aviv area day care centers at ages six- eight months, and of 37 children whose mothers stayed at home till they were 2 1/2-3 years old, were compared when the chil- dren reached four years of age. Dr. Klein points out that mothers who must, or wish, to work a half-year after giving birth, need not Pear any universal negative ef- fect of "maternal depriva- tion" on their babies, pro- vided the care the children get at the day care center is adequate. JTS Collections on Microfilm NEW YORK (JTA) — In- dexes for two major mic- rofilmed collections in the library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) have been published recently by Uni- versity Microfilm Interna- tional (UMI). One is an index to the li- brary collection of manu: scripts on Maimonides "Mishneh Torah" and the other is an index to the JTS' 213-manuscript history of science collection. The officials said the two indexes complement an ear- lier publication by UMI, "Judaica Collections from the Library" of the Conser- vative institution, and make available to scholars everywhere much valuable but previously inaccessible material.
