Banquet to Recall Vaad's
Continued Communal Role

When the Council of Or-
thodox Rabbis of Greater
Detroit celebrates its 52nd
anniversary on May 26, it
will mark the continuing
fulfillment of the funda-
mental goals set by the
organization's, founders at
their very first meeting.
The Vaad's anniversary
banquet will be held at 6
p.m. May 26 at the Renais-
sance Ballroom of the De-
troit Plaza Hotel.
Nine rabbis met formally
as the Council for the first
time on Dec. 17, 1929, at
Beth Tefilo Emanuel,
Taylor and Woodrow Wil-
son, Detroit.
The host of that first
meeting was Rabbi
Aaron Ashinsky. He was
joined by Rabbi Ezekiel
Aishishkin of Cong. Bnai
David, Rabbi Joseph
Thumin of Cong. Beth
Abraham, Rabbi Moses
Fischer of Cong. Bnai
Moshe, Rabbi Isaac

Stollman of Cong. Mis-
hkan Israel, Rabbi Zager
of the Tyler Street
Synagogue, Rabbi
Kleinplatz of Cong. Beth
Yehudah, Rabbi Strauss
and Rabbi Horowitz.
Among the specific areas
of concern they addressed at
their first formal meeting
were -the need for a standard
burial practice for all con-
gregations, the need to es-
tablish minimum Jewish
education standards.
Today, the Council, pro-
vides an extensive list of
community services.
The Vaad's 52nd anniver-
sary banquet will be the oc-
casion to honor the
memories of three brothers,
Max, Abe, and Sol Nus-
baum, who contributed to
causes and institutions in
the community.
For reservations and in-
formation, call the Vaad
office, 559-5005.
