Herzog said Sadat is a visionary who understands the historical process and the future. Herzog said Egypt is now reaping the ,benefits of the peace proc- ess, but that does not rule out that Sadat could be Is- rael's adversary or even enemy in the future. Friday, May 8, 1981 .69 Jews of Guadalajara Have a Vtable Community land, where the peaked roof of the synagogue soars above the eight-foot high walls which customarily surround property in Mexico. The architecturally dramatic sanctuary, whose seating capacity may be greater than the total number of Jews in Guadala- jara, is the home of congre- gation Bet Shalom. For the past three years, the leader of the congrega- tion has been a 34-year-old Argentine social worker who studied for several years at the Latin American Rabbinical Seminary in Buenos Aires. Although he carries 'out all of the rab- binic functions for the con- gregation, he makes it quite clear that he is not an or- dained rabbi. On the bulle- tin board, he is identified as Prof. Shmuel Szteinhen- dler, community leader. About a third of the com- munity attends Friday night services, presenting a cross section of old and young. When a family celebrates a Bar Mitzva, most of the community is present for the early morn- ing service and the brunch which follows the service; lunch is generally eaten be- tween 1:30 and 3 p.m. The Club Deportivo Macabi operates the ath- letic facilities, which in- clude tennis courts, swimming pool, basket- ball court and football Ten years ago, the, Con- (soccer) field. Agudath Israel of America. By MORTON ROSENTHAL NEW YORK (JTA) — Can a Jewish community of 140 families survive the forces of assimilatimi and perpetuate itself in a city of three million non-Jews? This nagging question sur- faced in many conversa- tions during a recent visit to Guadalajara, capital of the state of Jalisco in Mexico. The first Jews arrived in Guadalajara in the 1920s from Europe with the inten- tion of staying there only a short period of time. Jews of Guadalajara have avoided the distinctions be- tween Ashkenazim and Sephardim which divide many Jewish communities in Latin America along sharp sociological lines. The rriutual accommodation be- tween the two groups goes back to 1928, when a joint cemetery was established as the first act of the commu- nity. Some years later, when Sephardim objected to the inclusion of Yiddish in the curriculum of the Jewish day school, which had been established by the Ashkenazim, Yiddish instruction was elimi- nated so that all students might attend and Hebrew instruction was begun. Today, the Jewish day school has about 160 stu- dents in grades kinder- garten through nine. age youth generally par- ticipate in community ac- tivities; about. 40 attended my lecture at the Center on Saturday afternoon. When they reach college age, many enroll at the uni- versity in Mexico City and some of them do not return, preferring to become part of the larger community in the capital.
