New Biography on Arthur Fiedler

Arthur Fiedler was that has become the
known the world over as an trademark of the Boston
entertainer par excellence Pops. In "Arthur Fiedler
and for the special blend of and the Boston Pops"
classical and popular music (Houghton Mifflin), Harry
Ellis Dickson provides
2
thoughtful insights into the

career and personal life of
the "Maestro" and the work-
ings of the orchestra that he
referred to as the "classiest
jukebox in the world."
Dickson, principal vio-
linist of the Boston Sym-
phony and associate con-
ductor of the Boston Pops,
knew Fiedler for nearly 50
years. This anecdotal ac-
count moves from Fiedler's
youth in Boston, to his stu-
dent years in Berlin, to his
early days as a violinist
with the Boston Symphony,
and finally, to his heyday as
conductor of the Pops and as
a television and recording
personality.
Among the book's high-
lights is Dickson's recount-
ing of the triumphant
Bicentennial Concert given
by the Pops in 1976.
