Construction begins next week. The dinner, to be held at Adat Shalom Synagogue, will be attended by Israel Ambassador to the United States Ephraim (Eppie)Ev- ron, "reflecting the impor- tance the government of Is-, rael attaches to this event," declared David B. Holtzman, Metro Detroit Is- rael Bonds general chair- man. Holtzman said the dinner will also recognize local Canal Founders, individual purchasers of at least $100,000 in Israel Bonds earmarked for the canal project, over and above their regular Bond purchases in support of Israel's economic de- velopment. The campaign to enlist Canal Founders, part of an international effort, has re- sulted here in 15 Founders to date. Founders' names will be permanently in- scribed at the canal site. In calling on Founder prospects to take part in this historic project, Holtzman said, "Energy represents an issue of the highest priority in Israel, more so than for any other country in the world. In the 1950s, the Arabs tried to throttle Is- rael by using water as a weapon — by trying to di- vert the waters of the Jor- dan to destroy Israel's ag- riculture. At that time, Is- rael Bonds provided the funds to build the National Water Carrier and made it possible for Israel to become self-sufficient in 'agricul- tural production which was then the bulwark of its economy. "Now, in the 1980s, the Arabs have sworn to use oil as a weapon against Israel and any country which sup- ports her search for peace." Holtzman expressed his confidence that the Israel Bond Organization will enroll many more Founders in the next few weeks "and thus help Is- rael as she begins this revolutionary energy project." By linking the Mediter- ranean and Dea Seas, Israel can generate enough hyd- roelectric power to signific- antly reduce its dependence on imported oil. This is the Fewer Strikes JERUSALEM (JNI) — The number of days lost to strikes in Israel in 1980 fell by 59 percent compared to 1979. Nearly half were lost in the public sector. Statistics show that strikes cost the Israeli economy 216,516 workdays in 1980, compared with 529,369 the previous year. Only 91,451 workers joined strikes, down from 250,420 in 1979. The total number of strikes fell from 116 to 84 and the total of partial strikes and sanctions from 98 to 54. first time in the 30-year his- tory of the Israel Bond Organization that the Israel government has requested Bond funds for a specific economic project.
