in promoting daily contacts
with the new settlements
(observation points) in the
mountains of the Galilee.
These high mountain places
were established in recent
months to safeguard the •
Jewish presence in the
Galilee.
The new settlers are
building, tilling the ground
and experimenting with
vegetables and fruit or-
chards.
The Nahal units have
adopted the remote settle-
ments. "We are all soldiers,"
the commander of the
Nahal units in the Galilee
told us. "The only difference
is that we wear uniforms
and the settlers wear work
clothes." The Nahal mem-
bers climb the mountains
each day in their jeeps in
order to visit dozens of set-
tlements and to encourage
them, giVing them the feel-
ing that they are not alone.
The Nahal members
not only safeguard the
security of the country,
they also fulfill
humanitarian missions.
There are five Nahal
bases in the Galilee: Zivan
(on the Klen Mountain,
near the road leading to
Sassa), Marve and Ashhar
(in the valley of Sahnin),
Netufa (on the Turan
Mountain) and. Tsalmon.
There is a Nahal settlement
also on the highest moun-
tain of the Golan Heights.
During the last two years
Nahal bases were turned
into civilian points. like
Kishur, Natur, Beit Rimon
and Tuval.
In charge of the Nahal
patrols is Yizhak Aniv of
Ramat-Gan. He wishes to be
a member of a settlement
after finishing his military
service. There are many

like him in the mountain
settlements of the Galilee
who have exchanged com-
fortable apartments in the
cities for modest houses in
the Galilee.
A Nahal officer, Eli
Amir, told us: "Our task is
to encourage the isolated
and lonesome settlers of
the mountain settle-
ments. We are the only
daily contact with them.
Only the knowledge that
they are protected by
brothers and friends,
who are always ready to
lend them a hand in their
need, gives them a good
feeling.
"When there was a need
to surround the settlements
by security fences, Nahal
soldiers volunteered to do
the job. They planted trees
in the settlements and when
there was a need for an
English teacher in a settle-
ment, the Nahal soldiers
provided a teacher."
The Nahal soldiers also
maintain good relations

Shells Hike Sales

TEL AVIV (JTA) — One
of the most successful items
now produced by Ta'as, Is-
rael's national arms indus-
try, is a kinetic energy artil-
lery shell for tank combat,
Ta'as director Michael Shor
has disclosed.
Together with a newly-
designed small-size Uzzi
submachine gun, the shells
have helped boost the in-
dustry's sales to over $500
million per year.

the Nahal soldiers for help.
The Nahal commander
