Hertzberg, active member of the Federation Board of Governors and former president of the Jewish Vocational Service and Community Workshop, to organize a committee that would encourage Jewish organizations to arrange programs for the growing number of Soviet Jews set- tling here. Hertzberg said the proj- ect's purposes were to better acquaint the newcomers with their Jewish heritage, and to make them aware of the many religious and sec- ular organizations they could join to become in- volved in Jewish communal life. The Russian Accultura- tion Committee got under- way in winter 1980. It was comprised of representa- tives from several of Feder- ation's member agencies, such as the United Hebrew Schools and the Jewish Community Council, and communal organizations, such as the Synagogue Council of Detroit, the Rab- binical Commission and Bnai Brith. Hertzberg said a special moment for members of the Russian Acculturation Committee and the Synagogue Council was se- eing the "overflow crowd" of Soviet Jews who attended Rosh Hashana services last year at Temple Emanu-El. Rabbi Lane B. Steinger helped arrange the event. Leading the congregants was Russian-speaking Rabbi Victor Rashkovsky of Cincinnati. Committee members were told that when he gave his moving sermon about the problems of Jews in Russia, "there wasn't a dry eye in the house." 'The committee plans to bring the rabbi to Detroit for the services again this year. A vehicle for educating the Soviet Jews is "Fonarik," a monthly Russian-language news- paper produced at the Jewish Center. Dr. Berton said the name of the news- paper means "Little Lan- tern — because it sheds a little light on American life." "Fonarik" contains ar- ticles on Jewish and secular topics by area English- speaking writers. Tatiana Polsky, a Soviet Jew who worked briefly on the Soviet newspaper "Pravda," trans- lates the articles into Rus- sian for the newspaper. Dr. Berton said many Soviet Jews have told her they are enjoying the accul- turation committee's pro- grams, particularly those having to do with Jewish heritage: "For the first time, they know they have a 4,000-year history." She said for many of them, watching the recent ABC-TV mini-series "Masada" gave them a "feel- ing of belonging," and added that a group of Soviet Jews are proudly looking forward to joining the Jewish com- munity's march in the May 10 Israel Independence Day Parade in Southfield.
