Akiva Yom Hashoa Booklet

Students at Akiva He-
brew Day School have pre-
pared a booklet of their
writings on the Holocaust
for Yom Hashoa, Holocaust
Remembrance Day, which
is being observed today.

Included are poems, a
short story about the rise of

Hitler in Germany, inter-
views with Holocaust sur-
vivors and several word_
games. The following poem
by Ira Finkelstein, son of
Akiva teacher Paula Fin-
kelstein who coordinated
the project, is the beginning
of a longer poem on the
Holocaust.

What Is War, Daddy?

By IRA FINKELSTEIN

War is red, my son, blood red.
War tastes like raw meat from a freshly-killed animal.
War sounds like a scream of pain and mortal terror.
War smells like a grey smoky haze over the battlefield.
War looks like the first cousin and chief patron of the Grim
Reaper.
War is the fear of the moral government and the weapon of
the lawless state.
War is the excuse of a fanatic to kill, rob, molest, degrade and
dehumanize his personal enemies.
Adolf Hitler knew this well. He made sure the Jews knew,
too.
