the Communications Minis-

cities. Although radio and
television are private
enterprises, they are con-

The channels in question
were applied for by several
groups, including Journal

and the Abril publishing
company in Sao Paulo.

owned by the Rio-based
Bloch Publishing Co. which
is headed by Adolpho Bloch,

of the largest publishing

America with over 2,000

Santos, born Ab-

Jewish immigrants from
Greece. He began his
career as a pushcart
peddler, became a pro-
ducer of television pro-

He is not identified with
the Jewish community.
The daily, 0 Estado de

government's -choice of a
naturalized "foreigner"

(Abravanel) to purvey na-

JEWISH VITALITY: The American Jewish Commit-
tee will celebrate 75 years of its existence at its five-day
annual meeting in Washington May 13-17. The Jewish
National Fund will celebrate its 80th anniversary in New
York on Monday. The New York Board of Rabbis which -
represents more than 1,000 rabbis of all denominations –
Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist —
will celebrate its 100th anniversary on May 17.
The American Jewish Historical Society, which
reaches 90 years of existence next year, will, for the first
time, hold its three-day annual meeting in New York May
15-17, marking the 100th anniversary of the immigration
of East European Jews to America and giving its members
from all over the country the flavor of all Jewish sights and
historic sites of New York — the city which was the gate to
the Jewish immigrants 100 years ago and later.
Other leading Jewish organizations will hold their an-
nual conferences in May. The United Jewish Appeal will
have its annual four-day national meeting in New York on
May 12-13. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee
will have its two-day annual meeting May 18-19 in Wash-
ington. The National Conference of Soviet Jewry will con-
duct its two-day annual meeting May 18-19 in New York,
and the Conference- of Jewish Communal Workers will
open its annual convention in New York on May 31.
U.S. RECOGNITION: Special attention will be paid
this spring to the 100th birthday of Dr. Mordecai M. Kap-
lan, the "father" of the Reconstructionist movement, and to
the 80th birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi
Menahem Schneerson. Dr. Kaplan was born June 11, 1881,
in Lithuania; Rabbi Schneerson was born on the 11th of
Nissan, corresponding to April 15 this year, in Russia.
In honor of Rabbi Schneerson's birthday, the American
government has proclaimed the day of his birth as a "Day of
Education in America."
THE LUBAVITCH INFLUENCE: The sphere of
influence of Rabbi Schneerson has long transcended his
Hasidic community. During the 30 years of his leadership
— he is the seventh Rebbe in the dynastic lineage of the
Lubavitcher leaders — he consistently intensified the out-
reach work in stimulating Jewish consciousness among
alienated youth and assimilated families.
There are today Lubavitch centers in about 40 Jewish
communities in this country. Lubavitch centers and schools
have also been established or expanded by the Rebbe in
about 20 other countries. Israel is dotted with a large net-
work of Lubavitcher educational institutions, in addition to
Kfar Chabad, the Lubavitcher settlement near Tel Aviv,
and other settlements, including one near Rehovot where,
more than 750 Russian families are housed. The
Lubavitcher Rebbe sends families from the United States
to take up residence in Israel.

PLO, Yugoslavia to Join
on World War II Film Effort
ALBANY, N.Y. (JTA) —
The Palestine Liberation
Organization and Yugoslav
film-makers are jointly pro-
ducing an Arab-financed
motion picture that por-
trays Palestinian Arabs as
aiding the partisans in
Yugoslavia during the Nazi
occupation of that country
in World War II, Abraham
Foxman, national associate
director of the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith said here Monday
night.

Speaking
community-wide Yom
Hashoa observance mark-
ing the 38th anniversary of
the Warsaw Ghetto Upris-
ing, Foxman said the $8
million film, titled "Death
in Flames," will have its
premiere at the Conference
of Non-Aligned Nations in
Baghdad in 1982 and will be
serialized for television.
According to Foxman,
"the only Palestinian who
came to Yugoslavia in 1943
was Haj Amin El-Husseini,
the former. Grand Mutfi of
Jerusalem, and he came
from Berlin in Nazi uniform
to bless the newly formed SS
Hanjar Division which
fought against the parti-
sans," Foxman said.
Foxman said "the only
Palestinians who aided
the partisans were in fact
Jewish Palestinians from
pre-Israel Palestine." He
was referring to Hannah
Senesh and others who
. •
parachuted into Yugos- W
lavia in 1943 and joined
the partisans. Senesh, on
a mission to rescue Hun-
garian Jews, was cap-
tured by the Nazis and
executed.
Foxman said that he
spoke with a representative
of the Yugoslav government
in New York after the ADL
received information on the
film. He said that in re-
sponse to his protest, the
Yugoslav official asked
him, "how do you know that
two Palestinian- Arabs did
not come to the aid of the
Yugoslav partisans?"
