PPrs"I' ^ THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, May 1, 1981 15 AN OPEN LETTER TO THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF METROPOLITAN DETROIT From Marvin H. Goldman and David S. Mondry, General Chairmen 1981 Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund "I feel that I have been robbed, my freedom is being robbed from me, my home and all the familiar streets I loved so much. I have been cut off from all that is dear and precious to me. Tears come to my eyes. All our helplessness, all o\Cfr loneliness lives in the streets, there is no one to take our part. And we ourselves are so helpless! So helpless!" Those words were found in a diary written in the Vilna Ghetto, by 16-year-old Yitschak Rudashevski. Today; on Yom Hashoa, 38 years after his death, we mourn his memory. It is a mourning not with tears but with clenched fists. With resolve. With strength and unity. In less than four decades, we have helped achieve the rebirth of the Jewish nation. We have stood up to challenge after challenge from those who would relegate us to a chapter in the history books. With all the concerns yet to be met — of the aged and assimilated here at home, of the disadvantaged in Israel, of the victims of oppression in many lands — we refuse to be silent and steal away. We refuse to be helpless. On Wednesday evening, when we bring to a conclusion the 1981 Allied Jewish Camaign, we will celebrate more than the close of this massive undertaking. We will celebrate our community's commitment to survival. Arid, in that celebration, we will honor a young man named Yitschak.
