Mark Schlussel Is Chairman of May Scholars' Festival

Mark Schlussel has been
appointed chairman of the
Scholars' Festival
scheduled for May 22 (Lag b'
Omer) to May 24, it was an-
nounced by Ruben H.
Isaacs, president of the
Jewish National Fund of
Metropolitan Detroit. The

event is a coordinated effort
of the Rabbinical Council of
America, Detroit Region;
and JNF.
The weekend has been
designated as Yemai Iyun b'
Halakha which is a period of
Torah study for all ages and
men, women and children.

Rabbi Leo Landman,
national leader of the
Rabbinical Council and
chairman of its Israel
commission will be
scholar-in-residence. The
theme of his pre-
sentations will be:
"Halakha — A Tree of

Schlussel received a BA
degree from Wayne State
University and his Juris
Doctor degree from the
University of Michigan. He
was a councilman of the city
of Southfield. He was a
president of the Association
of Hebrew Schools, compris-
ing the day schools in the
Detroit metropolitan area
and served as president of
Cong. Shomrey Emunah for
two years. He is a member of
the Culture and Education
Division of Jewish Welfare
Federation and is a board
member of the Federation
Apartments.
Rabbi Sidney Green is
chairman of the Detroit
Region, Rabbinical Council
of America.

NY Rep. Asks
End to Polish
Anti-Semitism

WASHINGTON (JTA) — -
Rep. Stephen Solarz (D-
N.Y.)has sent a letter to the
Polish ambassador to the
U.S., Ryszard Frelek, de-
manding that his govern-
ment "rectify" a recent inci-
dent of anti-Semitic van-
dalism at the Jewish cemet-
ery in Bialystok.
Solarz sent the letter
after Rabbi Lowell Kronick,
chaplain of the Bialystoker
Center in New York, re-
ported that a monument to
the victims of the 1906
Czarist-inspired pogrom
was removed from its place
of honor in the cemetery and
taken to the outskirts of the
city after being broken up.
