Two Southfield Councilmen
Defend Their Parade Vote

Southfield City Council,-
men James McDermott and
Philip Peterson have denied
charges of racial prejudice
raised by Richard Lobent-
hal in a radio broadcast last
week.
Lobenthal, Michigan
regional director of the
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith, castigated the
two councilmen foi, voting
against allowing the Israel
Independence Day celebra-
tion and parade in South-
field on May 10.
The city council approved
the events on a 3-2 vote.
In a story on the front
page of the Southfield
Eccentric on Monday, the
two councilmen de-
fended their positions.

Peterson, according to
Lobenthal, voted against
the parade because the city
was asked to absorb police
costs for the event. Peterson
at the same meeting voted
routinely against imposing
such costs on a similar
parade.
Lobenthal quoted Peter-
son as saying that South-
field residents who wanted
to parade represented
"foreign interests."
Peterson told the
Southfield Eccentric his
vote was not prejudicial
and he stood on his re-
cord of 20 years as a
Southfield councilman

Israel argues, "Even
though we sin and Thou art
angry, Thou shouldst not '
forsake us: for if the potter

"to dispel any notion of
bias."
Lobenthal
charged
McDermott with believing
"if he permitted Jews to
parade, the Nazis might
show up and so he ended up
siding with the Nazis by try-
ing to ban the constitutional
rights of the Jews."

* * *

A group calling itself the
Security Service Action
Group (SS Action Group) of
Westland and Dearborn
Heights has sent a letter to
the Southfield City Council
saying that it wll non-
violently demonstrate at
the Israel Independence
Day parade in Southfield
May 10.
The letter, signed by
"John Reigh" with the salu-
tation "Heil Hitler," claims
the group supports the
Palestine Liberation
Organization because "we
feel Israel has stolen Arab
land. The PLO is the legiti-
mate people to whom the
land belongs."
The letter said the group
would be non-violent but "if
we are attacked we will de-
fend ourselves ruthlessly."
