Bloch's Service
Sunday on WTVS

"Avodath Hakodesh"
(Sacred Service) by corn-
poser Ernest Bloch will be
seen and heard 11 p.m.
Sunday on Channel 56
(WTVS-TV).
Produced by the South
Carolina ETV Network,
"Avodath Hakodesh" was
funded by the South
Carolina Committee for the
Humanities. Additional
funding was provided by the
National Endowment for
the Humanities and the
ETV Endowment of South
Carolina.
Taped during the summer
of 1980 in Charleston, S.C.,
at the Kahal Kadosh Beth
Elohim Synagogue, Sun-
day's performance features
the Charleston Symphony
Camarata, conducted by
Lucien De Groote, and the
Charleston Symphony Sin-
gers, conducted by Emily
Remington.
The text of the "Avodath
Hakodesh" is derived from
the liturgy of the Saturday
morning Sabbath service as
it is found in the Union
Prayerbook. The music uses
a variety of modes and
styles, from Gregorian
chant to Oriental scales to
very modern chord
structures.'
