Young Leftist Quits Anti-Semitic Germany By MOSHE RON The Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent TEL AVIV — There are unfortunately a few Jews who join anti-Israeli circles throughout the world. There are even Jews who support the anti-Israeli propaganda of the Palestine Liberation Organization. A young Jewish writer in Germany, Henryk Broder (who was born in Poland), recently quit his leftist frj after he became ( SAY IT WITH TREES JEWISH NATIONAL FUND 27308 SOUTHFIELD SFLD, MI. 48076 557-6644 Monday thru Thursday, 9 AM to 5 PM Friday 9 AM to 4 PM Sunday 10 AM to 1 PM nn'P I11! r 1 1=- KEREN KAVEMETH LEISRAEL convinced that their activi- ties against Zionism and Is- rael are the result of anti- Semitism. He accused them of being anti-Semites like their parents during the Nazi period. Broder declared in Jerusalem, after leaving Germany and settling in Is- rael, that there is no differ- ent Germany. There are some decent Germans with morals, but those also existed during the Nazi period. Broder lived for 24 years in Germany. He tried to convince the Germans that they have failed to become real democrats. He saw that his campaign had no re- sult and could bring him only damage. Therefore he decided to leave Ger- many and settle in Jerusalem. Broder was born in Kat- towitz in 1946. His parents were sent by the Nazis to Auschwitz and Buchen- wald, his sister was hidden by gentiles. After the liber- ation, the Broder family de- cided to move in 1957 to Germany, because of the anti-Semitic atmosphere in Poland. They settled in Col- ogne. anti- said Broder Semitism in Poland was worse than in Germany be- cause the Germans were still afraid. A German pupil told him once in the school in Cologne, when he heard that Broder was a Jew, "They forgot to kill you in the gas chambers." This was the only case when he heard an openly anti- Semitic remark in school, though he and his family never disguised that they were Jews. Henryk Broder studied at the University of Cologne and worked as a journalist with several German news- papers. He published a book about youth problems. He learned that most of the famous German writers were Jews, who had warned in time against and pre- dicted the moral fall and !decay of Germany. At the end of the 1960s, Broder saw the eve of a new era in Germany dominated by leftists. He became active in these circles, started to demon- strate with the other youth who demanded a better order, more democracy and more at- tention to the masses. Broder thought that the new leaders of Germany, President Gustav Heinemann and Chancel- lor Willy Brandt, would achieve these goals, but he felt deceived by them. Broder maintains today that all the negative ap- pearances and char- acteristics of the German population during the Nazi regime still exist today. He says that there are again broad circles in the German society which believe in ra- cism and consider the small Jewish community in Ger- many as alien elements. Broder demonstrated in the small town, of Nordhorn, where its inhabitants did not allow a Jewish family to settle. He carried a placard with the slogan: "Nordhorn will be clean of Jews." He reported that the town of Hamelin had refused to erase the name of Adolf Hit- ler from the list of its honor- ary citizens. He published several articles in German newspapers and had several interviews on German radio stations. He also wrote some books, the last one with the title, "Germany Is Awaken- ing." Broder maintains that PLO terrorists have trained members of the German left in the use of weapons. They are anti-Semites, anti- Zionists and -anti-Israel. Broder became an ardent Zionist and decided to settle in Israel. He asked his German friends, "There are hardly any Jews in Ger- many today. Why are you so anti-Semitic and anti- Israel? You are living in a country, where the president is a former Nazi , and in which 'mass- murderers are moving freely about. You dare to call Israel a fascist and racist state?" Broder now lives in Jerusalem, attends an ulpan and has a Sabra girlfriend. He plans to con- tinue sending articles to the newspapers in West Ger- many.
