Bnai David. The governor's proclama- tion states: "Less than 40 years ago, six million Jews were murdered in the Nazi Holocaust as part of a systematic program of genocide, and millions of other people suffered as victims of Nazism. Society must remember the atrocities committed by the Nazis so that such horrors can never be re- peated. "We must rededicate our- selves continually to the principle of equal justice foi: all people, remaining eter- nally vigilant against all tyranny, and recognizing that bigotry provides a breeding ground for tyranny. "April 30 has been desig- nated pursuant to an act of Congress, as well as inter- nationally, as a Day of Re- membrance of Victims of the Nazi Holocaust, known as Yom Hashoa. It is appropriate for the people of the state of Michigan to join in this international com- memoration. "Therefore, I, William G. Milliken, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby declare April 26-May 3, 1981, as Days of Remembr- ance of the victims of the Holocaust, and in the hope that our society will strive always to overcome prej- udice and inhumanity through vigilance and resis- tance." Representatives of the sponsoring organiza- tions witnessed the sign- ing of the proclamation. Sponsoring the May 3 Holocaust Memorial Academy are: Shaarit Haplaytah - Survivors of 1945, the Jewish Com- munity Council of Met- ropolitan Detroit, CHAIM - Children of Holocaust Survivors in Michigan, and the Detroit Round Table of the Na- tional Conference of Christians and Jews. In addition to the Academy, the sponsors are asking the Jewish commu- nity to observe Yom Hashoa — Holocaust Remembrance Day — on April 30 by light- ing a yahrzeit candle in the evening of April 30 and say- ing Kadish in the synagogues. One of the highlights of the May 3 Academy will be a candlelighting ceremony in which children of sur- vivors will accompany sur- vivors in lighting six can- dles for the Six Million. The Detroit Round Table has been encouraging Christian participation in the ceremonies and is ask- ing participants to wear the yellow Star of David at the Academy. NJ Holocaust Memorial Planned - CHERRY HILL, N.J. (JTA) — A permanent Holocaust memorial, one of the few on public property in the United States, will be dedicated June 7 in Camden County park, according to Alan Respler, executive di- rector of the Jewish Com- munity Relations Council (JCRC) of the Jewish Fed- eration of Southern New Jersey. The monument will be in the form of a six-foot high granite base. A 27-foot high stainless steel rendering of a memorial flame will top the monument, Respler said. With one-third to one- half contributions for the memorial coming from non-Jews, it was decided that the memorial should be dedicated both to the mem- ory of the six million Jews devilishly fine dining and spirited drink Hart Plaza murdered by the Nazis and to the righteous Gentiles who risked their lives to save Jews during the Nazi era. Canada Seeking Israeli Business HAIFA (JNI) — Israeli exporters "still relate to Canada as if it were an agent of the U.S., some kind of backyard neighbor, rather than a vibrant coun- try with an economy of its own," the president of the Canada-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Phillip Granovsky, told the Jerusalem Post last week. One of 11 Canadian businessmen visiting Is- rael, Granovsky explained the size of the Canadian market and its "thirst" for a variety of products in which Israel excels, adding that it Emigres Perform is "hard to understand and that Israeli expor- for AJCommittee painful"- ters to not make a major ef- NEW YORK — A per- fort to break into that mar- formance by the Soviet ket.
