Jewish activity in Louis-
ville goes back to the time of
Daniel Boone, the folklore
hero of the American fron-
tier, and the complete story
of that activity has been told
with the publication of
"Adath Louisville: The
Story of a Jewish Commu-
nity," by Herman Landau, a
veteran journalist and
community activist.
The 300-page book is the
product of three years of re-
search. Landau said he was
motivated to put down in
writing the histories of
Louisville's many commu-
nity organizations because
there were so few records.

percent of the 2,000 pupils
who took part in a Bar-Ilan
University survey of state
religious schools in the
Gush Dan area are from
non-religious homes and
have been sent because
their parents want them to
acquire religious values.
The research team was
headed by Professor Joseph
Glanz, of the Bar-Ilan
School of Education.
Few of the parents and
teachers questioned ex-
pressed opposition to the in-
clusion of non-religious
pupils in the classes. Profes-
sor Glanz, however, points

out that there are delicate
questions of integration
which require attention.
There were problems in so-
cial contacts and non-
religious pupils, for exam-
ple, tended to obtain lower

marks in religious subjects.
The sample of pupils was
taken from six state reli-
gious schools in the Gush
Dan area; three regular
schools and three for under-
privileged children. There

was a higher percentage of
non-religious pupils in
schools for the under-
privileged, and also a
higher percentage of non-
religious pupils of Oriental
origin.
