Jewish Teachers
Strike in Toronto

TORONTO (JTA) —
Nearly 800 elementary and
junior high school students
lost half their classes since
April 3 after 38 United
Synagogue day school
teachers began their first
strike in the history of To-
ronto's Hebrew day schools.
Jewish studies were not af-
fected.
One of the issues involves
teachers being asked to
work more hours for same
pay scale.

vanced weaponry to Saudi
Arabia, including Airborne
Warning and Control Sys-
tems (AWACS) aircraft.
Baker said he and his col-
leagues would also look into
ways to advance the Middle
East peace process.
Baker met with Premier
Menahem Begin, Foreign
Minister Yitzhak Shamir
and top Defense Ministry of-
ficials.
Baker did not express
his own opinion on the
CAVi eVel.,-WettireleaWifg
Saudi Arabia, he told re-
porters in Jedda that he
was sympathetic to the
deal but was unsure
which way the Senate
would vote.
Three Democratic Sena-
tors, Alan Cranston of
California, Joseph Biden of
Delaware and Carl Levin of
Michigan, have announced
that as soon as the Reagan
Administration officially
informs Congress of its
plans to sell the Saudis the
AWACS they will introduce
a resolution to block the
sale.
Cranston and Biden, with
the co-sponsorship of Levin
and others, have already in-
troduced a resolution to stop
the sale of additional fuel
tanks and Sidewinder air-
to-air missiles for the 62
F-15 jets the Saudis bought
previously.
Levin said he believed
that the vote on the
enhancement material for
the F-15s would be close but
that the Senate would vote
against selling the AWACS
to the Saudis. He explained
that not only would giving
the Saudis the AWACS
cause a "shift in the bal-
ance" of power in Arab-
Israeli relations, but "lots of
folks around here, including
me," are "leery of putting
advanced technology in an
unstable environment. We
saw what - happened in
Iran."
The three Senators
warned that the sale of
the AWACS to the Saudis
"will threaten our inter-
ests in the Middle East by
weakening our most
steadfast ally, Israel, and
by precipitating a
dangerous new level of
the arms race in that
region." The Senators
noted that if the Saudis
had AWACS, it "would
degrade Israeli air
superiority which has
enabled her to overcome
being outnumbered_ on
the gtound."

New Saudi Sale

WASHINGTON — The
Pentagon announced on
Wednesday that it will ask
Congress for permission to
sell Saudi Arabia 10,000
anti-tank missiles and a
number of ground radar in-
stallations.

Books are those faithful
mirrors that reflect to our
mind the minds of sages and
heroes.
—Gibbon

Democratic National
Committee Chairman
Charles Manatt has also
expressed his opposition to
the sale.
In a statement on the
House floor last week, Rep.
William Brodhead (D-
Mich.) stated, "We need
only look at the situation in
Iran to see the possible con-
sequences of providing this
advanced equipment to
Saudi Arabia. The sophisti-
cated planes and missiles
07 thte ASTa tor=
lah Khomeini.
In fact, it is ironic that
the previous administra-
tion originally recom-
mended selling AWACS
to Iran but was dis-
suaded from doing so by
congressional opposi-
tion.
"It is no secret that the
Saudi government is of
questionable stability, and
if it falls, the weaponry we
have sold will be in the
hands of people hostile to
our country and to Israel."
